Local Remotes

Local Remotes
I am needing to install a system that requires 5 local remotes. Any suggestions on brands, experience, CPI, Gai Tonics(Motorola) ? Thanks.
Re: Local Remotes
I hope they are not all on the same radio. Local remotes are not well suited for bridging a number of them
together on the same radio. You would have made a much better effort by going to a tone remote system.
Yup, I know it cost more money. However the issue of line loading of the mic and speaker lines is eliminated.
Good luck on your efforts.

Re: Local Remotes
Yes, they are to be connected to one radio. What manufacturer do you recommend for tone equipment ?
Re: Local Remotes
There are a number of companies that make tone remote control consoles and adapters. Not in any order, there
is CPI, Gai Tronics, Zetron, Telex that come to mind right now. Motorola makes some, but is top of the cost
structure. If you have a Tessco account, then you can order what you need from them.
You will need a tone remote adapter. The exact model will depend on what features you need. Like one
channel or multiple channels. They all have to have at least one channel and a monitor ability to meet FCC
requirements. The remote adapters require some interfacing to the radio. Most of the companies have
directions on how to connect to many of the radios out there today.
The control console is a term that is commonly used today. It can be any of almost any shape and design.
In general, many come in a telephone style that may even look like a telephone to something that may resemble
something like the old multi line operator desk set. What they look like will depend on what company and
what features you may need. Again you go from a single channel to multiple channels and even multi radio
control.
The nice thing of going to a tone remote control system, is that you can have the radio in the same room or
in another state. You just connect up to the 2 or 4 wires (one pair or two pair). The length of the line is
of no concern to you unless it's all on your property. then all you have to worry about is the line loss. If
you end up renting a cable circuit from the phone company, then they will put line amps on the circuit and
you won't have to worry about the loss. They will take care of that problem for you. It will just cost the
lease of the line each month. Haven't had to be involved with leasing a line for some time now, so have
lost tract of the cost. i would expect it to be in the order of $35 to $50 per month.
Each remote will come with a termination resistor inside it. read the directions and find where it is. With 5
remotes on the circuit, only the unit furthest from the radio should have the resistor left in it. All the others
need to have it cut loose on one end to reduce the loading on the circuit.
Adjusting the audio levels is a whole nother topic. There have been a number of threads on here how to go
about setting the audio levels from the remotes. I won't go into it again.
Hope this sheds some lite on your project.
