MTS2000 F/P UHF help
Hey all,
I have a radio sitting here a friend sent over for a new C/P. Before I brick his radio I just want to make sure it's not one of the tool-proof ones. It reads out as follows:
Model: H01RDH9PW1BN
Software Option: H35
Serial: 432AVY0580
Radio Software Version: 05.44
Radio Codeplug Version: 000B
Program Source RSS
Now mind you I have both RSS and CPS, so if RSS isn't it or vice-versa please let me know!
Regards,
-Frank C.

That firmware includes toolproofing. Best just to let the radio be.fchrist16 wrote:... I just want to make sure it's not one of the tool-proof ones. It reads out as follows:

Alright, so not even using CPS would work? I heard somewhere if you use CPS instead of RSS it would be fine.

I'm not completely clear on your question. Why a new C/P if the radio is working? If it's not working why are you concerned about bricking it? Are you really meaning that you just want to change the existing codeplug by re-programming frequencies, P/L tones or change settings in the radio? As akardam mentioned, that 5.44 is a very common firmware in the UHF "R" MTS2000's and it DOES include toolproofing.fchrist16 wrote:Hey all,

If you just want to re-program the radios existing codeplug and it was last programmed with RSS, then you may use RSS to re-program it (providing your RSS isn't an older version than the RSS last used to program the radio). If you choose, you may use the CPS to program the radio, but keep in mind that you can't use RSS on it thereafter.
I'll offer this for what it's worth to you: Use a genuine Motorola RIB and RKN4035D cable for maximum reliability. Anything less increases your risk of failure. Good luck!

With that firmware version he would be best off using RSS for routine programming tasks.

Terry,
Sorry I wasn't more clear. My friend has some ham repeaters he wants to add but the person who originally programmer his radio is no longer with us. I just wanted to make sure I use the right RSS, etc for adding before I brick his radio by punching something in on a toolproof radio like mine was.

Re: MTS2000 F/P UHF help
Toolproofing is only an issue if any versions of LAB/DEPOT are used to WRITE to the radio. So long as you are using "regular" RSS or CPS of the same or newer version the radio was originally programmed with, you should have no problems. The older (pre 5.5x) MTS2000's usually don't play well with CPS, so you'd want to use MTSX R06.08 or similar if possible.

So MTSX R06.00.00 should be fine? I'll use it and see what happens.

Re: MTS2000 F/P UHF help
Well, MTSX R06.00.00 will be fine as long as the radio hasn't already been programmed with MTSX R06.07.00 or R06.08.00. R06.00.00 is old and MTSX R06.07.00 has been out for about 8 or 9 years already, so there's a good possibility that a later software revision may have already been used to program your friends radio. You won't brick the radio simply because your RSS version is too old... you'll just get an error message ("codeplug too new" [or something like that]) and you won't be able to write anything to the radio.
If you have any problems with the RSS just use the Windows CPS software (you said you already have it). It should work without problems with your 5.44 firmware, it worked for mine. You should really avoid trying to use CPS on MTS2000's with firmware below 5.41.

For what it's worth, we're being told not to touch the radio with CPS if its firmware is less than 5.63.Terry_Glover wrote:If you have any problems with the RSS just use the Windows CPS software (you said you already have it). Thanks for everyone's help! My friend has a successful/re-programmed/not-bricked radio. Akardam, where in California are you?
I still have a bricked radio though. Something about the seller not knowing whether it was CPS or RSS that programmed the radio last...Read it with Lab, nice doorstop though.
