Motorola Saber SVA Display Problem
Greetings to all. I am new to the list and need some help after looking through all the articles for my particular problem. I have a Saber 3, non-secure (not sure of date code) and two SVA adapters (NTN5487BSP02) with the full display hand mike (NMN6150A)and 18 keys. The problem I'm having is the LCD display on the mike does not show any of the display information from the Saber. I've checked all the wires in the chord with a VOM for continuity and found no problems. I've switched it between both SVA units with no difference (still no display). A friend of mine told me the SVA's with this mike were notorious for not displaying the info from the radio. With that in mind, was this true? Was there a particular cause for the display not showing and is there a solution that I might be able to do myself to fix this. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Motorola Saber SVA Display Problem
Try cleaning all twelve contacts on the radio's contact block using a pencil eraser. The same problem with two separate 5487s indicates a probability that the problem is the radio itself. You might also burnish the contact fingers that rise up inside the SVA and touch the radio, using a LIGHT touch and a very, very fine burnishing tool.

Re: Motorola Saber SVA Display Problem
Couple of things:
-Does the handheld control head display a row of asterisks (like **********) or nothing at all?
-Do any of the controls on the handheld control work? Do the controls on the front of the SVA work?
If the display is showing asterisks, the cradle is for some reason thinking the radio is a no-display model 1 or 1E.
If the controls on the HHCH work - if you can talk through it, drive the keypad, use the monitor button and so forth, I'd be inclined to say you had a bad display in the HHCH itself. NMN6150s are pretty cheap nowadays, so it would be worth a few $$$ to pick up another one to rule out the one you have being defective.

Re: Motorola Saber SVA Display Problem
Sorry, forgot to mention that. All the controls on the remote hand mike do work, except the display. All controls on the SVA adapter work as well. However, my Saber 3 seems to have developed another problem. The channels programmed for my fire dept repeater go blank and the radio resets itself (turns off then back on) when I key on them. But, it does not do this on our non-repeated channels or any of the HAM frequencies (simplex or repeater) programmed into it. Does it as well in the SVA. Also, when the Saber is placed in the SVA, when on zone 2 (HAM) it comes up on the NOAA weather channel (channel 160 when the channel knob is set for channel (local HAM repeater). Is that normal or is my unit starting to develop internal problems?

Re: Motorola Saber SVA Display Problem
Explain what you mean by channel 160. A standard Saber only goes to 120. A System Saber goes higher and requires a 6169 HHCH, and it won't work on a 6150.

Re: Motorola Saber SVA Display Problem
A 6150 display mic will work with a systems saber the buttons dont corespond with the radio. I have one that I use with my SVA on a SS III UHF. A 6169 mic won't work with a standard saber. You mention the SVA's are SP models could that have something to do with it?
Re: Motorola Saber SVA Display Problem
Sorry Tom, typo. Meant channel 16 on zone 2. As far as I know it is a standard Saber 3. Says Securenet on top but I know I don't have the secure card. Not sure the difference between the Systems Saber and a standard Saber, still a little fuzzy on that. When I say the display does not show anything, it doesn't show anything, not even the asterisks as mentioned above. All the other function buttons work on the mike, squelch override, enter, select, ect. As far as a second mike goes to rule out, anyone have any leads on one for some reasonable $. Jeff

Re: Motorola Saber SVA Display Problem
I recognized the SP number from a kit I got that was Indiana State Police surplus. If his is the same, as far as I could tell it only added 2 wires out the speaker DB25 connector that (I'm guessing) went to a PAC-RT to activate it when the radio was pulled from the cradle. And yes, you're right that a NMN6150 will operate a Systems Saber, since I used one with my kit.FireCpt809 wrote:You mention the SVA's are SP models could that have something to do with it?
