converting XTL5000 mobile into a remote base

Hello - I have a need to convert a XTL5000 mobile into a remote base (adding 12VDC PS) and need a way to control it with either a DC or tone remote deskset with the ability to change channels.

Has anyone done this before or have suggestions on how to accomplish this?

There is no way to be able to totally control the XTL5000 mobile.

Yes you can add a tone remote adapter to the radio and control from between 1 and 8 or 16 channels, depending on
which remote adapter you use and which controller you use. I have used the CPI adapter panels and either the CPI
control console or the Gai-Tronics console. Zetron and Vega (now Telex) also make items that will do this. The
choice is really yours.

You have the choice of using a 2 wire or a 4 wire control system. The setting of the audio levels is important.
I won't go into that again as it has been on a number of threads before.

Well, not without a few extra parts...

An XTL5000 consollette can be controlled by an MC3000 and a L3208 Digital Junction Box

JIM202 - can you provide more details, like which remote adapter and console combination would achieve this.

I'm especially interested on how I can change channels from the console, since there are no channel steering line on the accessory jack in the rear.

I do stand corrected with a bare bones XTL5000 mobile. If you use it in a consolette base cabinet, the tone control
board does allow you to have 8 channels that you can pick. there is a catch here in that channels 3 and 4 are flipped
with channels 7 and 8 in the consolette tone control. Have no idea why our great mother M engineers did it
that way.

I have heard of a company controlling the radio via the SB9600 data buss. This allowed you to change zones
and modes, turn scan off and on, and a couple of other normal control head features. However, with that said,
Motorola might get upset with people playing with their SB9600 data buss with external equipment. They sort of
consider that their private stomping grounds.

There was an article on the web a while back that even provided the commands to make some of these features
work. All you needed was a level converter like a RIB and the command strings. Make the radio do what ever
you wanted. The SB9600 bus is by no means a secret, except very few companies have dared to play with
the interface.

I will tell you, you can hook a mc3000 up directly to the rear acc connector of a xtl5000 mobile, at least on the sb9600 send it does work. I did not go as far as trying to get an audio path, just to see how the control end worked out.

With an MC3000 deskset, digital junction box and an XTL5000 W9 consolette, you can control all 1000 modes and options as if you were using the normal control head. The buttons on the deskset are mapped to all the normal buttons on the W9 head, and the display shows exactly what you would expect it to. The junction box connects to the consollette via the DB25 on the rear, and the deskset connects to the junction box with CAT5. If you are really flush with money, you can connect four desksets to the same junction box, use headsets and foot pedals, and have supervisor and intercom functions.

To clarify, this is a XTL5000 mobile with a 12VDC power supply added, not a consolette.

In that respect, the Consolete only buffers the SB9600 lines. The same lines are available on the accy connector on the radio.
