Trying to Read MTS2000

Post by A0NE6 »

Have two model III radios in mint cond. with R05.41 f/w and s/n 432AUYxxxx, that were programmed many years ago but are in dire need of new codeplugs! Even though these are first gen radios (circa Dec. 1994), both are in perfect working order and have the 250 channel option. As I no longer have the original RSS disks, I am currently using RVN4097V RSS (R06.08). This version is able to read all 44 blocks of the original codeplug but validation fails with following error message in the center of the screen:
"These models of the radios are only supported by MTS2000 CPS R01.13.00 or higher."

So this appears to leave me with 3 options:
1. find a lower version of RSS, or
2. find a new version of CPS, or
3. sell the radios.

Any advice/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Correct, MTSX R06.08 will not work on 99% of MTS2000's. If you want to stay with DOS, you'll need MTSX R06.07. Or, purchase current windows CPS, and you'll have no problem.. MTS2000's with firmware R05.41 will have no problems reading/writing with CPS..

If your radio has old firmware, programming it with the latest CPS will not add any new features unless you have the latest firmware to match..

CPS = Customer Programming Software, Not CPS Software.

Thanks Marc, will have another look in my DOS archives to see if an older version RSS is hiding somewhere.

I am in a similar situation with a 900 MTS2000 model H01WCD4PW1CN. Tried to read with the DOS 06.08.00 that I received Monday from Motorola (RVN4097V)and got the "code plug to new" error. Paperwork with the software indicates that the "PW" model radios must be read with CPS and DOS will no longer work. So after reading this post I deleted 06.08.00 and installed 06.07.00 to see what would happen and got the same error message. So then I tried the lab version 02.00.01 and was able to read the radio. I hesitate to program it because I know it will lock up with the tool proof error. But what I found when I read the info in the history tab was that radio was programmed with RSS with sys key. The history also says the radio software version is 06.85. The code plug version is just a series of question marks. The program date is 090620 which I believe is June 20, 2009. So now I wonder is there a later version DOS RSS than the one Motorola sold me that will work or am I miss reading what I am seeing. The ultimate goal was to program into the ham bands.

Also, I can initialize the lab version in standard mode 02.00.01 and none of the depo tool tabs are listed. So my question now is can I program the radio with this version without bricking the radio.

Thanks, Joe

since you are not supposed to have the lab rss to begin with your best option is to order new cps and it will solve all of your problems with the exception of needing the key

Lab R02.00.01 will read any MTS no matter what it was last programmed with.. It was designed early in the MTS production life, and doens't understand certain fields when it reads a radio that was programmed with newer software. That is why you'll get alot of ??? in some fields. Do not write to your radio with that stuff, since your firmware is R06.85 it will Fail 01/93 it.

R06.08 was the last MTSX DOS RSS produced. If you get a codeplug too new error with R06.07, then purchase current windows MTS2000 CPS. It will read/write your radio without a problem.

Thanks Marc. I did purchase the RVN4177V package with the CPS and will try that. I just found a post in the 900 Ham forum about a procedure to modify the .exe file for ham use. If I have any issues I will post there for advise. Thanks again.

The most recent CPS version for the MTS2000 is R02.02.00. If you are getting an error that said "The device is not supported by this application" it might be that you are not using the correct software. If the software was too old you should get a "code plug too new" error. If it is the wrong software I don't understand how you could read it at all it should have defaulted right to the error.
