Using Wall charger without base.

Post by richrock13 »

Can the CP series ie; CP125, CP185, CP200, etc, be charged using the wall adapter directly into the radio. I know some of them you can plug the adapter into either the mic or spkr jacks.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
Mic and/or speaker jacks are sometimes used for programming as
well as for their primary function, but not for any kind of power input.
The reason you are furnished with a charger base is so that the
charger's internal circuitry can sense the internal resistance of the battery
and taper the charging current until the battery is nearly topped off.
If you put 12 to 14VDC directly into a speaker or mic jack you will
probably ruin your radio.

Well, SP50's were made to do just that. The compact or + models didn't even come with a base, thinking about is so were the SP10's and M series (Mu22c, etc) base was an option on those. Had some CP150's a few years back (esentially same as the CP200's less a few features) and I believe it was the same deal with those, only caveat is that it's trickle rate and for NiCad only. On all of the 'M' radios I've seen with this feature it's always been the lower of the 2 jacks (the smaller diameter one, looks like 2.5mm).

That was also my understanding on the SP50. You are correct about the battery type. I think that's an important factor. I heard you can also do this with the AXU4100 or smae as CP125 but I don't have the mannual to see which jack.

Tom in DC, many radios accomidate this feature. Yes you must know which do and which don't so you do not ruin your radio. That's why I'm asking.

Which is fine, as far as it goes. However, with the literally thousands of people who read this Board I don't think any of us wants to give the impression that it's generally a good idea to go sticking the wall wart plug into the mic or speaker jack on a radio, because it's not. Once the subject has been mentioned, there's some poor guy out there who will say, "I read that it's okay to plug the wall wart directly into my radio," and his next stop will be the Motorola depot to get the radio fixed, if such is possible.
