Convert Quantro to Quantar?
Can I take a Quantro T5365A, change exciter to Quantar module, install a Quantar power amplifier module and reprogram as a Quantar? Do I need a Quantar station module too? Or is the Quantro frame incompatible with Quantar modules? I have a Quantro 900 Mhz with external PA decks and was thinking about saving space by making into a Quantar with internal amplifier.
Thanks,
Ken

Re: Convert Quantro to Quantar?
I don't see why not, every Quantar station I've ever seen has T5365A as the model number on the back.
Re: Convert Quantro to Quantar?
Thats what I thought as well. I don't have the Quantar modules but was thinking about purchasing on eBay. It is risky to buy the modules not knowing for sure but I could re sell them if it didn't work out.
Re: Convert Quantro to Quantar?
Unless you absolutely need the space, I don't see much advantage to this. One of the big advantages to the Quantros (in my understanding) is the ability to use an outboard power supply rather than the notoriously unreliable and expensive Quantar power supplies...
Re: Convert Quantro to Quantar?
On the SmartZone system I maintain, we've had very VERY few power supply failures on the Quantar stations, and there are probably close to 150 of them system-wide.
The first-gen power supplies that were manufactured by Onan were complete disasters, often resulting in fires, flames shooting out, etc.
The second-gen supplies have been VERY reliable for us. I recommend anyone who has a first-gen Onan supply replace that as soon as possible, or have a really good insurance policy.

Someone else correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the backplanes are entirely different between the two.

If that were the case, I would've hoped Motorola would have given it a different model number.ka8ypy wrote:Someone else correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the backplanes are entirely different between the two.

Actually, you are correct.
The Quantar backplane (TRN7480) is different than the Quantro backplane (TRN7688)
The Quantro backplane does not have the connectors for Power Supply, Power Amplifier or Per Tray but DOES have external watt meter, Driver and PA signal inputs and External power supply inputs.

Why, they all have the same model number for different band/power?d119 wrote:If that were the case, I would've hoped Motorola would have given it a different model number.ka8ypy wrote:Someone else correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the backplanes are entirely different between the two.

The model number is generic, you have to look at the model/part number of the individual modules to know what it is band/power wise. It would appear to be the same for the backplane.
