Has any one figured out how to correct an XTS/XTL radio that has been bricked due to a computer glicth, or cable malfunction? The cost of sending the radio back to El Paso for $495 dollars is just too much.
Is there some part that needs replacement, or is this a software reset that needs to be done, and how can the average tech get it fixed?
To be honest, the native CPS has a REALLY good built in recovery tool. If that doesn't fix it, only depot level stuff will. As long as teh radio bootstraps, the CPS will correct 99% of failures caused by a programming / flash error.
Well, before you do anything else, perhaps explaining exactly what you mean by "bricked" would be a good start. Is the radio showing an error code, and if so, what? Can you still read the radio with CPS?
Bricked means I am getting a 01/90 error code, and the radio will not respond to the CPS. The bricking ususally happen in the firmware upgrade process, we are now upgrading to Version 12, and I have taken some hits on putting the radio out of order. The radio will not respond to any attempts to readit, or program it will any software.
This also has happened when using CPS, in one instance I pulled the cable out of the radio thinking the download was done. Doing so created the 01/90 warning, and that is all the radio will display on the screen. This seems to be the worst culprit.
Well, if you're having radios bite the dust in the process of a firmware upgrade, and you're using all Motorola OEM equipment and established procedures, I would tend to think you have a good case for Motorola to cover it under warranty.
As for losing one to pulling the programming cable out during programming, that happened to me once (sheepish grin). Unfortunately there was nothing I could do to recover it. Not even dash mounting the radio and going in through the rear allowed CPS to talk to the radio, so off to the depot it went.

Do the firmware upgrade again, but go through the recovery process. Using a serial cable, it takes a LONG (greater than 30min) for the radio to be completely "cleaned" and fixed by the CPS. I usually start it, then work on something else while it is brewing.
These are 05 heads in the mobiles, but the Version 12 upgrade has hit some of the older W7 head units in another part of the state. Usually Motorola covers the issue if it is associated with the upgrade, but we always encounter something odd that happens during CPS prograamming, like a computer going to sleep. or the radio turning off for some unexpected reason.
