It was foretold that it may be used for upgrades or storing larger contact lists or some deal like that. It is accessible in the middle of the chassis when you take the battery off.

They didn't want to store avatars and smiley faces for ASTRO TMS in the internal memory, so you put them on the SD card.

Okay, since we're already going in that direction.. can you load a "wallpaper" background image for the large center display, either via CPS or a MicroSD card?

The purpose of the MicroSD slot can be purchased for 550.00 U.S. Dollars. You will have to sign an agreement not to release the purpose to anyone else or face legal doom from Moto. The contract that you will sign is for 3 years at which point you will be able to renew the purpose. If you choose not to renew you will have to go to your local Moto shop and have the purpose evacuated from your memory. Of course this requires proprietary cables, RIB, and a very expensive CPS.

What did you expect?

Happy New Year Ya All!

I heard from Motorola at APCO that they were planning to use it for Mapping or other data applications requiring additional memory.

Whoopee.

Another feature on a radio that is already too feature rich.

Whatever happened to a PTT switch, 16 channels and two extra buttons?

(Don't even get me started on cell phones - which STILL don't work everywhere they used too.....)

Oh, but they're going to build a nationwide 700MHz broadband public safety network that's going to work everywhere and enable field delivery of all sorts of rich content... and probably partner with a cell/wireless company to do it! Unfortunately, they haven't yet come up with a plan to make the end users any smarter...

Hmmm, not sure what prompted the slam on public safety, first responders which much of this board is made of either directly or indirectly. Hope you didn't have a bad encounter with one of us.

To the SD card, I think we"ll see most of industry adding these types of ports to new production radios. I suspect they defined a "purpose" but not yet made it public.

Anyway, on with the guessing!

Happy New Year! Even to those who may not like us;-)

No slam on public safety - I happen to be a member of that particular community myself. That said, I purchased a model 1 XTS5000 for fireground use because my model 3 is simply too complicated for easy fireground use! And the APXs are worse. And I'm an "enthusiast"... the average user is totally lost. Fancier radios, prettier displays, broadband use, mapping, etc. are way more than your average firefighter or patrol officer need or want.

As far as the construction of the broadband network... that's more of an issue with the politicians and consultants who want their piece of the pie...

Personally, I'm not sure any radio makes me smarter. The radio does make me more efficient and effective. For me it's a tool.

They do have a lot of "stuff". I agree that most of that "stuff" really is not all that important in comparison to intelligible & reliable voice communication, the foundation of "communication".

So on with that micro sd card! Maybe we could put the criminal code in there. Or, friction loss for every size hose made known to man. I don't know.... :o

After serving for 20 years in a SWAT role, but also a deputy chief at a fire department, those two options sound great to me.

Perhaps your particular model 3 is only more complicated because the codeplug designer was not a field user? Got me, but if you are able to use a model 1 on the same system without loss of critical features, why did they buy 3s in the first place? Heck, Baltimore has gotten by with model 1s for ten years AND they use all 48 modes!

That reminds me of a codeplug that used to baffle me on a regular basis. MTS2000 250 mode (AN model at that) with all 250 modes in use. 249 modes in Zone 1 and 1 mode in Zone 2. Took FOREVER to go through the channel list. I truely felt sorry for a user that had to go from channel 2 to channel 149.

Couldn't they just go down three channels? But yea, I understand. There is a place around here like that.

Not sure if it made any difference but the GPS option would seem to freez for a second when working with waypoints, I plugged in a micro 512 sd for laughs from an old cellphone...it does not freez anymore....... just my two cents.
