Astro Saber 1R conversion

Post by IMBEJames »

Is it possible to convert an Astro saber 1R to a non-R version? I have a couple VHF's that I wouldnt mind converting. I also would like to upgrade them to model 2 or 3, and it just seems easier to find housings for non-ruggedized radios.

The guts are the same, so they are easy to do.

I did 1 a year ago. Just undo the 2 screws on the bottom, pull the guts out of the "R" case & pop it into the regular case & tighten the screws. Remember to remove the accessory plug cover. Now you can use the regular batteries. GARY N4KVE

This is good news. I have 2 model 1R's sitting here that are useless unless I break the bank to buy ruggedized batteries.

Off I go to find non-R housings :)

Remember when you re-tighten the screws to make them hand-tight only, otherwise you will crack the radio frame.
