More Spectra Strange Happenings

Well here's a new thing for me.

My spectra which HAD dual heads enabled got put through a small update (read: Frequency change on a mode) and added a new scan item to the list.

Now the dual head option is gone. The siren/pa option had been disabled as well. Anyone run into this issue before? The saved c/p gives me the same thing but I have a similar c/p I can put back into it via Clone mode, I just don't want to try and re-insert all the modes and custom names into the similar c/p.

Ideas?

Your radio was poorly hacked. Reading it probably sets all sorts of options to NOT AVAIL.

Just a small update based off my readings here.

When I put in via Clone a similar C/P it'll take it no problem but then when I read it all the extras are gone. This is the same radio I was having trouble with a few months back and put in a new MLM Board. The Dual head setup worked fine from then on until now.

Is there something else i should look for?

EDIT: Got it working right. A friend has the "shant be named software" and swapped serials so it'd take it and read/write with no problem.

Is there any chance you using a computer that is too fast of a clock speed when your doing the programming?

The Spectra software is not very forgiving when used in the windows mode or with too fast of a computer. It has
to be in a pure DOS mode on the computer.

If a 333Mhz and 150Mhz machines are fast, err slow enough then I should just throw in the towel, give up my ham license and sell my equipment...

I've now successfully over the last 3 years programmed every piece of my own equipment. Thats about 12 spectras, 5 GM300's, 2 Maratracs...Well you get the idea.

Back on topic though, the fact that it programs fine now is fine by me.

How about a 286 machine. That's what I keep around for my Spectra's, Sabers, HT-50,P100,Maxtrac and GP and GM series radios. I also use a 486SX, the DX processor sometimes doesn't like the software and gives me a devide by zero error. Unfortunately most of these radios are over 20 years old in design if not by manufacture. I can't stress enough that I believe 90% of programming problems is the computer, you have to use the type of computer that was manufactured around the time of the radio.

Spectra radios get a little testy when you start pushing the upper edge of the computer speed. One suggestion
that you might try is to turn off the computer cache. You can download the simple program "cacheoff.com"
from the internet. Run that before you start up the Spectra program. See if that works any better for you.

Weird how all of these people are having problem with spectras. Are you using the latest RSS version? As far as I know, that is processor independent. I have programmed and read my spectra many times with a 1GHz Laptop, with a real serial port, in MS-DOS 6.22, and ALWAYS turning cache off using CACHEOFF.COM

Seems like turning the cache off on these faster computers will allow the spectra to read/write no problem. I have, however, successfully READ (haven't tried to write) my spectra with the Cache on.

Maybe your Serial port's FIFO was turned on? Every time I turn on my computer in DOS, though, FIFO is turned off.
