Spectra High power A9 Control head programming

Post by elesjuan »

I'm back for more abuse (motorola and I don't get along very well lately!)

Bought 2 Spectra VHF T83 drawers @ Dayton for 40 bux. Can't for the life of me find affordable power connectors for them, so I made my own. NO WAY I'm spending 25$ a piece on connectors when I can make them for around $1.30 each.

Anderson PowerPoles FTW. Now that's the kind of hackin' n crackin' I love! (after the picture I did get a real right angle spade connector for the +12v, just didn't rephotograph)

I digress...

These radios come with no control cables, programming cables, power cables, or control heads. The stickers with programming info on them are pretty well demolished from age so I can't tell anything beyond T83. Made up a programming cable with some DB25 male / female connectors and tried to read the codeplug. Control cable is a very nice tested unit I just picked up from another member on here along with a known working A7 control head. There is my problem! Guess the radio expects an A9 control head and fails to read the codeplug!

"Error Number 79 Has Occurred: Cannot access the S9000e Control Head."

Tried to google and search on here for a solution to this. I do not have an s9000 control head yet. Any way to circumvent this issue so I can at least read and save the codeplug?

As always, very humbly.. Thanks!

Have you looked on batlabs.com and the repeater builders site yet? There is a wealth of info on both sites on these radios. Plus Mike B has
a bunch of info on his site.

After doing your homework, if you have some questions, come back and ask.

Well, I *thought* I was rather familiar with both repeater-builder and batlab's spectra writeups, but I guess not.

I have 10 different spectras that I'm using however this is my very first hi-power and I'm not remembering much on either site specifically for the T83s.

Will go look over both sites again and report back.

Hey Jim-

Just wanted to update my post. Found TWO articles on the bitbanging to swap control heads around. From what I was reading it scared me a little bit because sometimes I have bad luck with sketchy things like that.. Didn't wanna brick my new radio! haha.

All in all, the process was very painless. Had to jump through some major hoops to borrow a version of lab that'll talk with this radio but got it!
