Quantar VHF Wide Low TX Deviation Question?
Hello fellow Bats,
I am curious what might cause low Tx deviation, even with the CW ID, in a VHF wide analog Quantar. For some reason, although programmed to transmit CTCSS, it does not seem to do this either. I was wondering if it might be all in the Tx Deviation section of the alignment??? I've never seen this before in a Quantar and was hoping one of the Guru's here might have a clue where I should look. Good PA Tx power, but low Tx deviation including CW ID, and seemingly no Tx CTCSS.
Any help would be appreciated.

Perform the tx deviation alignment procedure in the rss, and then tell us what happens.

I just did the Tx Deviation alignment, and the output is the same: low Tx deviation, no apparent Tx CTCSS. Could this have previously set up as a data station or similar? I'll see if the output may be set to narrow somehow. Still very puzzling.

I found a post stating that stations with an EPIC-III Control Board (cln1614b?) may have very low out-of-band audio. My station has one of these boards and is programmed just slightly OOB (2MHz). Could this be the culprit?

Have you done a sanity check on your service monitor to verify it is displaying deviation correctly by looking at another radio?

Yes - verified that if I programmed a fully in-band frequency pair that the repeater functioned fully with normal deviation, Tx CTCSS, etc. Very curious why this occurs with just this EPIC-III Control Card.
I believe we had just the opposite happen: Using a low-split unit just out-of-band (154-156) and it worked just fine.
I wish there was a simple work-around!

Have you done the mod comp alignment as well? In the dev alignment screen, were there any test freqs that overlapped your freq? Have you tried subtracting 1000 from the reported dev in the closest test freq(s)? ie: during alignment on test freq 160.500 you typed in 2735 - change that to 1735 and then see where the mod lands for your freq.
One thing came to mind - did you set mod for 100%? I don't recall which screen it is in, but you can set the global dev to a percentage of the maximum. It's not in the mode screen. It says RF something at the top.

You're not going to fix this by playing with the alignment, mod-comp or anything else.
It's a firmware issue - and - you can't substitute firmware from a different version card because the EPIC-III uses a different type SIM.
So - the solution is the same as I previously posted: Replace the EPIC-III card.
