Motorola P1225 transmitting issues

Post by zackman1801 »

Recently i came into ownership of a Motorola Radius p1225 portable radio. The problem that the radio seems to be having is that when the radio comes off the charger and has a fresh charge it will not transmit. Each and every time i push the transmit button no matter the channel that it is on, the radio makes the same noise that it does when the battery starts to get low, and stays playing the duration of the time the button is pushed. I have tried playing with the Mon, and Opt buttons to see of there for some reason an issue with those with no luck. I am unsure of what to do as i am a relative newbie to fixing or working on radio.
The radio seems to scan and receive everything fine as it will scan my county wide Fire/EMS dispatch no problems, it just will not transmit at all.
The Radio seems to work fine and charger seem to work moderately. Although i have noticed that the charger takes a Long time to charge and does not charge the battery very well, to remedy this problem i ordered a new battery, is it possible that the battery will not hold enough power to transmit a message?
I also have a second radio in the same model that does the exact same thing, im just wondering what the problems could be with these radios.

On a side note, Does anyone know of these radios have, or could be programed to alert/open when certain tones are picked up?

Thanks for any help you can give me
Zack

Hello:
If its a solid constant beep when you press the ptt button id qeuss the radio is programmed for recieve but tx is programmed as blank.
Since no tx is programmed the radio would and should produce the solid beep during a ptt attempt.
Can you read the radios programming to confirm this by chance ?

+1 on the radios not being programmed to transmit, especially considering both radios are exhibiting the same behavior, solid tone upon ptt, more than likely not programmed. The battery issue is probably unrelated, either they're too old, or have memory issues (nicads in particular are known for developing a "memory" and will not take a full charge- not too much you can do about it without a battery excerciser (although a locol radio shop may be able to do this for you).

At this current time i have no way to look at the programing, i dont have the hardware to check. When i turn the radio on it makes one loud high pitched beep followed by 3 lower pitched beeps (BEEEP, beep beep beep) each time i press the transmit button it makes the same noise for the duration of the time that the button is held. I have tried to talk over the beeping, but it wont pick anything up. I am wondering of the battery that the radio has is completely shot to the point it wont even hold enough juice to power a transmission. The radio has been on the charger for about 24 hours now and the light is still red.

Sorry for the double post
After looking at some other websites and other sources of information, i think that the radio might only be receieve only. This is strange for a FD issued radio but who knows. I am going to have the radio totally reprogrammed very soon so that i can use it with all 3 of my fire rescue depts, and have all of the channels i want/need for all 3 (2 are in diff counties) so when i do that i can figure out what is going on, or if i can even do anything with the radio.
However i did create a video to show you what is going on with the radio. I guess i will let the video speak for itself as it is going to explain much better than i ever could what exactly is going on.

Radio programmed for receive only.
Bad battery, does not even have enough charge to power the speaker beeps.

Hello
Yep i agree 100 percent with Will.
You are programmed as recieve only and after viewing the video you supplied.
Its my opinion as Will already said = You have a bad battery as well.
You need new batt and reprogrammed with tx rights enabled in the radio.
It wouldnt be strange for a FD to have radios programmed as rx only because the radio could very well be used for paging purposes rather than using a pager they could be using the P1225 as a pager for better reception ect.
QCII was an available option in the P1225 if my memory serves me correctly by adding the feature.

Yeah, i ordered a new battery a few days ago. It should be here next week.
The only reason that i found the radio to be strange as receive only is that it has sub channels that would be rather useless to have on it unless you could transmit.

Thanks for the help guys. When i get the new battery ill update this to see if it changes anything, which im hoping it will.

Hello:
Might sound useless without tx rights but actualy quite useful if being used for rx paging reception.
