XTL5000 powering down when keying mic **FIXED**
i have got a xtl5000 that has 11.00.1 firmware in it, i installed a UCM in it and when you key the mic it powers down the radio. i double checked the power supply. the UCM has 5.7.10 firmware in it. could this be a firmware mismatch problem or should i look at something else first?

upgrade the firmware that's a version with really bad juju

You might also check the voltage on both the ignition wire and the high current feed while you try to key the
radio. If the voltage goes too low, the radio will go into a reset and do what you describe. Just because the
voltage is good at the source, doesn't mean it's good at the radio. A bad crimp, poor fuse connection or a
corroded wire joint could all cause the problem. If in a vehicle, you might also want to check the ground
connection both at the radio and at the battery.

escomm is correct - you should check Power Cable - lugs, crimping/soldering qualuty & etc. Bad electrical contact can result similar appearance.
I am biggest fan of XTS2500 and ASTRO Digital Saber.
Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic
its on a power supply on the bench. i can run any thing else on it and this started as soon as i put the ucm in the radio.

Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic
Does the UCM have the RF shield installed?
Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic
Yes sir.

Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic
You have a Host/UCM mismatch. UCM R05.07.10 is matched with Host R14. I'm assuming by your post that the radio only started doing this after you installed the UCM. Only option at this point would be to remove the UCM or get the radio Host firmware refreshed.kt2728 wrote:i have got a xtl5000 that has 11.00.1 firmware in it, i installed a UCM in it and when you key the mic it powers down the radio. i double checked the power supply. the UCM has 5.7.10 firmware in it. could this be a firmware mismatch problem or should i look at something else first?

Round 2
I have upgraded the Firmware in the radio to 14.00.03 and 14.00.00 (the latest off of MOL). i upgraded a Different UCM and used a different carrier board. here are the symptoms now.
if secure is not selected radio will transmit fine and decodes all received signals. Clear or Encrypted analog or digital.
before it would not key up at all with the ucm installed.
If i am digital mode and try to transmit with securenet turned on the radio powers down and right back up. same as before.
if it is on an analog channel the radio locks up on transmit. i have to turn it off to stop the transmit. no audio is trasmitted and when i let off of the ptt it drops carrier and monitoring with a radio with open squelch it is the most awful noise you have heard.
Ideas? Please.

Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic NEW PROBLEM
What's the radio model number, and the part number on the UCM?
Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic NEW PROBLEM
M20KSS9PW1AN
NNTN5032G is the part number on the UCM.

Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic NEW PROBLEM
What is the part number of the carrier? Is the radio in a W or O series configuration? Dash or remote?
Can you confirm that you've tried multiple carriers and multiple modules with the radio and they all produce the same results?

this radio is a O5 dash mount 50w radio. it has the 3day retention carrier board. i have one more carrier board and some more modules. i will try them and post the results.

Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic NEW PROBLEM
Where is your antenna in relation to your radio? We had problems with RF back feeding into the control head and cable on High power XTLs. Most of the time I have seen this problem with glass mount antennas in close relation to the radio.

Matt to answer your question this radio is setup in the house on a power supply. antenna is on the roof.
I tried this radio in a mobile setup and swapped out the carrier board and UCM today all with the same results.
the part number for the carrier board is MHLN6918. when i looked it up on mol it brought up a different number. has there been any issues with the carrier boards?
it still powers down in astro mode and locks the radio up in analog securenet mode.??????

Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic NEW PROBLEM
MHLN6918_ was subbed to PHLN6918_, sounds like they just redid the prefix, they're both still at B revisions. Either way, that is the correct, O series compatable 3 day carrier.
Have another radio you can try the carriers and UCM's you've tested so far with, just to further eliminate a component from being the issue?
Sounds like you might have a radio drawer problem...

Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic NEW PROBLEM
The problem is the secure board. There is a bad cap on it. I think there was a TSb floating around for the fix.

I assume this is for Ham use, but it's just my assumption. Anyways, has Part 97 been changed to allow encrypted operation on the Ham bands?kt2728 wrote:Matt to answer your question this radio is setup in the house on a power supply. antenna is on the roof.
Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic NEW PROBLEM
That FSB covers high power 110w drawers. I suppose it is conceivable that it is still an issue with a mid power drawer, but I don't recall any notes for that configuration.GmanX wrote:The problem is the secure board. There is a bad cap on it. I think there was a TSb floating around for the fix.

The OP could call support to verify that performing the fix on a UCM destined for a mid power drawer won't cause more problems than it might fix.
Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic NEW PROBLEM
i have a high power xtl that i have not had a chance to test yet. i will post the results as soon as i can.
GmanX can you email me a copy of that fix i would just like to read through it. if it is the carrier boards i will just order me some new ones from motorola as i do not have the required equipment to do small surface mount work.

Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic NEW PROBLEM
The FSB expires on Sep 30 of this year. You may be eligible to return the UCM for repair or alternately receive a replacement. Pending the results of your test of the same UCMs and carriers in another radio, I would suggest you contact support.

I have several mid power XTL2500s and XTL5000s (VHF)that power down when in the secure mode. I ordered the 150pF capacitors the other day, from Motorola, that are referenced in the FSB. I referenced the FSB when ordering and got 25 of them at no charge.
However, unless you have a really nice soldering station, a good magnifying glass/work lamp, steady hand, a lot of experience, and some patience, I don't know that I would try adding the capacitor yourself.
So far, the one radio I have tested seems now works as desired. I will do more testing and let you know how it goes.

Re: XTL5000 powering down when keying mic NEW PROBLEM
Had All of my ucms updated per the FSB.
this radio still has the same symptoms. i cannot key up the radio with the ucm installed. i have hooked up my 110w remote head XTL in the truck and it works with no issues. i used the original module and carrier board i had in this dash mount radio.
i have swapped out the ucm and carrier board twice and have had no luck.
I installed this dash mount radio in a vehicle and had no change.
could the tuning values have anything to do with this?
Could there be a firmware mismatch with the control head?
this control head was on the radio when i updated the firmware.
i have turned down the power to 40 watts in the cps, tried low power.
Any more ideas?????
thanks

Sorry to hear that the updates didn't seem to take on your radio! I will ask more questions and see if I can come up with more info.

I upgraded to R15.00.08 and DSP 15.00.05. Installed a triple des (XL OFB and 256). and upgraded the UCM to 5.07.12.
the damm thing works now. All i can figure is it must have been something in the firmware.
