XTL5000 O5 head Maintenance Mode

Post by Jayce »

I have a rear-mount XTL5000 that was originally setup for an O5 control head. It was switched to a W4 head and worked fine. I'm now trying to convert it back to an O5 model and I can't get it out of maintenance mode. It has a FAIL 01/90 code, SW MISMATCH error upon booting. I've changed the control head via CPS, written the new codeplug to the radio, and "successfully" synchronized the control head but it is still in Maintenance Mode. I've swapped control heads and cables. Any ideas on how to force this thing into working? I don't really want to send it to Mexico but if no one has any tricks up their sleeve, then I will be forced to.

Try putting the CH in bootloader mode (hold emergency button and right most soft key while powering up the radio). Wait to see if your computer wants to reinstall the flashzap device. Then try the upgrade/sync. That might work, might not. Good luck

Remote mount or dash mount? I smell a head/CHIB mismatch.

Head mismatches don't give fail 01/90, they give 05/94

Sometimes. I've seen mismatched heads give 01/90s, not power up at all, or give perpetual maintenance mode, but have the hardware work perfectly fine with swapping either the head or the CHIB.

I have one doing this now, but I didn't swap heads or anything. Just unplugged it and took it downstairs and then back upstairs and hooked it back up and Fl 01/90 and Maintenance Mode/Remote Device.

Did you get yours working Jayce?

No, it kind of got shoved way back in the pile. We are in the middle of rebanding, along with installing a new Astro 7.7 system including upgrading the electrical at 2 sites. I guess I'll eventually send it off to M for flat rate.

What I need to know is if the control head re-syncing must be done from the gcai or if it can be done via USB on the rear. This may have been what got me to this point, as I only have rear USB access and was looking in the control head tool but canceled out when I saw the picture showing the GCAI cable and did not hit finish. I swear it was working fine after that but who knows maybe it took a power cycle for it to really start acting up. Mine is a 2500 but that should make no difference I imagine.

There is a possible solution, check online for the pin-outs for the rear RS-232 cable or get one from Moto-Parts, the one that connects to the port where the speaker line and B+ connect, program the radio through this port, you may have to reflash the radio but it should recover.

The issue is that programming from the front of the O5 head (especially true if using USB) the head reboots several times and if the software hasn't completed writing it will brick the head, it's painfully common. By flashing from the rear to the front, you eliminate the loss between the head and the brick.

I've recovered 95% of 01/90 O5's this way.
