Headless X9000 ?
Is it possible to run a Syntor X9000 with out a head? I would like to use one as a transmitter portion of a project. I know the spectra can be used in that way but I can't find anything about the X9000.

Anyone?
Re: Headless X9000 ?
I have never tried it. One difference is the X9k radio drawer power source for the switched 9.6 and 5 volts comes from the control head. The spectra gets this power from its radio drawer power leads. The Spectra control head only signals the radio drawer when to turn on or off.

J1 pin 1 PTT which is normally not used would be required. Pins 27 and 14 would need to be connected to microphone. Pins 44 and 22 would need to be connected to a speaker. Pins 8 and 10 would need to be jumpered to the large A- pin for negative ground installations. You could customize either a Syntor X or Syntor X 9000 radio cable J1 connector for this purpose.
However, all of this may not make any difference if the radio drawer firmware (the operating firmware, not the code plug) freaks out and refuses to let the radio operate when it cannot see a control head on the Systems 9000 bus. I do not know the answer to this question. I suppose the answer is if you try it, it will either work or not work.
If it works, the radio drawer should only be programmed for one single mode.

Thanks for the info. I will give it a try before shelling out $$ for a cable and head that I really don't need. If it works I will post the details.

Re: Headless X9000 ?
I saw this post yesterday, but today I just realized that the radio might not work since it expects to see a control head. It might work or it might give you a serial bus error.
Re: Headless X9000 ?
I had thought about that too since the 9000 interacts with the head in a different way than a spectra does. If I can come up with a cheap cable and head that might be easier in the end. It doesn't matter what condition it is in as long as it works.

Quite honestly, it may be easier to just change the personality board to a standard Syntor X.
