A TRBO radio has no "mixed mode" receiving capability, unlike other digital radios.
So the answer to your question is that a TRBO will communicate with another TRBO
radio, or another analog radio, but not both at the same time.
The "echo" you mention seems to be a thing on all digital radios.

The "echo" is usually only heard when both radios are next to each other because of a slight delay. If you separate the radios by 50 yards so they are not in audio range of each other, you won't hear the echo. Eg. I go to the pool & grab an Astro Saber. I make sure they're on the same freq & TX saying testing,1 2 3. Both radios are within 5 feet of each other & there is an echo. When I'm at the pool a half mile away, & my GF calls me on the same radio to say dinner is ready, there is no echo. GARY N4KVE

I would say the same thing. Try and take them at least 50 yards away from each other to help prevent the echo from happening. I had the same thing happen with mine. At first I was irritated, hoping that I didn't buy something that would cause me problems. However after increasing the distance between them, I am happy again.
Experimenting with delay timers is so time consuming.
