Installing a newer CPS also requires updated firmware. The version 3 CPS that you attempted to use leads one to think that your firmware in the radio is very old.

No, it doesn't. You can generally use new CPS on radios with older firmware, you just won't always get access to the latest and greatest features.

Plus, the BN models weren't even around when CPS R03 was released...

Sounds like the OP is having an issue with the CPS he installed, not specifically with the radio (CPS R03 read it even if it couldn't unpack it). Try uninstalling and reinstalling the CPS. Also, are you using an OEM or aftermarket cable, and USB or serial?

Hi,
I'm using home-brew cable that based on MAX233, I have tried to build on max232.
Because i got only one connector for the radio (13 pin) may be the problem there. Sometime the radio blinks and resets while reading, and sometimes not.
I have checked the connector and the cable with fluke and everything ok.
Can I buy programming rs232 cable from e-bay ?

Thanks

Homebrew and aftermarket cables on these radio's almost always lead to a failure of some type. Do yourself a favor and buy an OEM cable and never look back, you will not regret it.

FWIW, they pop up on here from time to time fairly inexpensive.

Lance: What?
Kilgore: Napalm, son. Nothing in the world smells like that.
Kilgore: I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...

There are some OEM cables on ebay for around $50.00. Just do a search for RKN4106 or RKN4106A.

seller is rickthompson. stand up guy. where I got mine, new in the Motorola factory boxes. Why would you screw around with risking your pricey XTS's. ditto with what everyone else has said, buy the OEM cables and save yourself the aggravation.
