VHF antenna length varies on the frequency split that it operates on. With the GP300's, if it is a OEM Motorola antenna, there may be a small dot of paint on the screw base of the antenna. The color shows the split. If it is after market, it may not have this. I have used a high split antenna on a lower frequency range, and did not notice any difference. However, if you want the maximum range from your radio, I would suggest just buying new ones that are the proper split that you are using.

The Visar antennas, as far as I know, also come in this way, but have a different connector that allows the pin in the center of the radio connector sit in the hole at the bottom of the antenna.

There are so many different types of antennas available, you also have the 3 1/2 " stubby which are only good for short range use or in areas that you have strong repeater signals. I've also seen 18" whips, and wide band. There are many more, but ultimately it is dependent on what you are using your radio for, and how far you want the signal to try to go.

i am using vhf 163-174 i have no repeater use just base to mobile, so i need the most range as poss, the gp300's have 6" antenas with blue rims on the antenna connection and the visar's have 4 1/2" antennas with blue rims on them as well. would these be a good size antenna for what im using. so the stubby antenna's are for short range and the longer the antenna the better the range, is that how the hand held antenna's work, cause the mobile antenna,s have a SWR on them???
Thanks Lance

Blue connector is correct for the high split you are using.
Black for the 150 split
Red is a wide band that gives up a bit of gain for allowing operation from 136 to 174.
