Changing the frequency of a Motorola Radius P50

Post by ff6112 »

I have a Motorola Radius P50 it currently is set to TX 151.6250 and RX 151.6250. I would like to change it to MURS TX 151.820 and RX 151.820. Where can I get the crystals and what is the formula to find what crystals I need?

Hello:
There are only two crystal manufactures id even consider other than motorola.
International Crystal Manufacturing = 1-800-725-1426
Bohmar crystal = Dont have the phone number here in front of me.
You can contact eigther one and just mention the P50 and the freq you want and they know the formula to make the crystal .
I cant speak for all crystal manufactures but i will say this; You can buy a JAN crystal but youll have trouble with them in not too long of a time.
Ive been there with there crystal and ill be dambed if ill go back to crappy troublesome crystals they supplied.

The P50 is not a narrowband radio and thus is technically against the rules for usage on MURS 151.820MHz. If you have the tall version P50, it will also make too much power to be compliant with MURS rules.

Thanks for everyone's help but its not worth buying crystals for a $10 radio so I guess I will put it back in my junk box.
Thanks

I still maintain a few P50's on that frequency, if you're willing to part with it, I would take it off your hands. I personally like these radios, not worth fixing when they break though. Definitely a disposable radio at this point!

Hello:
I read a post here on batlabs that the postee claimed two of the MURS freqs were going to be legal art 25 khz wide band and also 12.5 khz narrow band a while back.
And i think they said they were the 154 mhz freqs in the Murs band.
Can anyone confirm this ?
If so he could convert to the 154 Murs Freqs as an option if he or she so desired .
Did a search ad found the post :
It was author Stage 2 and was posted Oct 6 - 2010

For the benefit of the OP, Bomar Crystals are located in New Jersey and have a website you can Google.

The top two MURS channels are still wideband, but the bottom three channels have always been narrowband.
That's what the regs say; what people do might be another story completely.

For anyone who needs to read up on MURS there is an excellent FCC site as well as several other private sites
which cover the subject in detail. Here again Google is your friend.

FWIW, 151.625 is "Red Dot" and an itinerant frequency. While it is a BRS channel and licensing is required, it is one of those "gray area" frequencies where there is a ton of unlicensed activity. That P50 would pick up all kinds of business traffic in a metropolitan area.

Around here in the 90's the swap meet was on that frequency, as was the local miniature golf establishment, some technicians that worked on the original Pacific Bell GSM system, and a bunch of other stuff.

Don't be surprised to hear your local Wal-Mart on it.

Hello:
When as stated above the top two MURS freqs are still wide band :
What are the two freqs that are considered top ?
And are these two going to remain wide band after the narrow band ruling as of the FCCs ruling ?
Thank you Satelite

154.57 and 154.60 are the "top" MURS channels and are wideband, at least as of now.

As of today Google is showing 16,100 "hits" under "MURS radio frequencies."
