If a Maxtrac is only being used to receive, is there any reason why I can't swap PA decks between radios? Is transmitting is the only thing that makes the decks range-specific?
A friend broke the antenna connector on his 900/FLF1016A. I have a whole box full of 800/HLF1038As.
I plan on repairing the broken deck because I've never done it and need the experience, but it would be a lot easier if I could just swap him decks and not have to worry about ruining something I don't own.
If I do swap decks, how does this impact the alignment data stored in the radio? It is my understanding that for receive-only radios this data is irrelevant, but I've always recorded and restored it when blanking and reprogramming simply so the radios *could* be used to transmit at a later date if needed.
If swapping the decks requires new alignment data, I don't have any means of creating it beyond using the crystal data, tuning number, and +9.6 VDC/V-Diode measurements.
Thanks in advance for any info or advice you can share.

Re: Swapping Maxtrac PA decks
No need to swap PA decks, just solder a new connector in its olace and be ddone with it.
The antenna connector is easily desoldered, but for ease of the task, it's best to unscrew the board, and the nut holding the stud of the PA transistor to the heatsink (if there is one).
You should be able to repair the radio in well under an hour.
But for the technical reasons, you can't swap band specific models as there are harmonic filters to contend with on the output of the PA assy.
The actual repair of the connector will be quite simple, as you will see...no worries.
If you need a connector, simply perform the same task on another unused PA deack, Circle-M uses the same connecctor on all 'Trac models.

Oh well, it was worth asking. Thanks for the clarification.AEC wrote:But for the technical reasons, you can't swap band specific models as there are harmonic filters to contend with on the output of the PA assy.
