Base Station control over fiber optic link

Post by yhwolfe3 »

I have an Astro Spectra Base station that is currently controlled over a copper link by an RCH3000 via CD1337 modem. I'm moving it to a building that has a fiber optic backbone. Will the RCH3000 work over fiber or is there another deskset available that will?

It should especially if it is a sonet. You just need the appropriate hardware for the fiber to copper conversion. Most likely you will be replacing the telco modem with a fiber "modem". Black Box and Moxa are good sources. You'll want the appropriate connector type and mode for the fiber mux you'll be connecting to. You should check to see if they already have DS0's available that you can insert and drop your traffic without any changes.

Thanks Bill, I'm just going to use a media converter at either of the fiber. My only concern was keying. Can't find a spec sheet on the RCH that identifies what type keying it uses. Obviously can't send a voltage or ground key over fiber. I'll give it a test on the bench when I get all the hardware delivered. Thanks again!
