XTS5000 reboot problem

Post by jtruland »

Hi all,

I tried a quick search on this problem but realized I really don't even know what I'm searching for. I seem to have a problem with my XTS5K rebooting itself. It happens when I place the radio down, when clipped to my pocket, or when I unclip the belt clip from my pocket. My biggest problem is that it does not happen everytime, and I have never been able to reproduce it on purpose. I have not opened this radio, it's my most expensive one and I just haven't gotten up the courage, but it is a recased/reflashed type 2 to type 3 conversion. Anyone ever heard of something like this or know possibly what component/design flaw might cause this?

Thanks much!

Sounds like the battery is losing contact. Is it an aftermarket battery? Check the contacts for pitting or being bent. Give the contacts a good cleaning as well.

You might want to consider buying a case removal tool for the XTS which makes it possible to remove the case without cracking it. Inside you'll find that there is one ribbon connector of the multipin type that makes the radio chassis work with the electronics that are part of the case. The multipin connector, if seated properly, should not give you problems, but since the radio was disassembled and put back together who knows what might have happened to the pins on the connector. Note that the radio's power is also switched by the ribbon connector circuitry. The case removal tool will cost you between five and fifteen bucks, depending on where you buy it, but it really does work very well for its intended purpose.

I had considered the possiblility of the battery not being seated well, but I've never been able to reproduce the issue by moving the battery in any way. I'll have to look into the ribbon cable, I was kinda afraid of that  Anyone have one of the tools they'd be willing to sell me?

Thanks guys.

I have seen the exact same problem you describe and have had difficulty reproducing it but it was the battery. Do you have another one to try?

Unfortunately, I don't. I appreciate the inoput though, I'll look into that a bit more.

Just because I'm curious and like to rule everything out, what firmware version is in your radio? I know there were a couple of re-booting/resetting issue bugs with R12.xx.xx..

If your radio has old firmware, programming it with the latest CPS will not add any new features unless you have the latest firmware to match..

If You are using a W&W GARBAGE battery! Replace it with a new Motorola battery ASAP! The W&W Garbage batteries have a bad habit of causing the same problem with many other radios as well.

+1 on the aftermarket battery. My 3000 did the same thing and it annoyed the heck out of me.
