Astro Spectra 9600 Baud Questions....

Post by kb0nly »

Ok first off lets not debate the scanner vs radio issue here, i'm merely doing this to experiment and learn. I have setup VHF 3600 baud trunking on Astro Spectra's, killing their transmit by physically removing the transistors so they can not generate any RF period! These radios are cheap compared to used scanners that will do digital so might as well get some use out of them.

Here is my latest project...

D04UJH9PW7AN
10008-000480-9 1 Meg

I am told that by using R05.03 that i can setup the radio for rebanded operation on a 9600 baud CC system. (plan on removing the rf module and final PA transistor to make sure it can NOT transmit period as i have done in the past) The problem is i have been reading a lot of reports that with the 9600 CC option the radio will not unmute without first affiliating with the system? Is there a workaround to this? If so can someone explain this thoroughly?

I can get a hold of Astro Spectra's pretty easy, would like to know if this is possible, figure out how to do it, and document it for RBTIP. If people are going to do this at least tell them how to do it safely so they dont interfere with a system!

Thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide!

Read Mike Mauren's post here: http://batboard.batlabs.com/viewtopic.p ... 62#p367128

Of course, if the system has (or ever adds) any 700 MHz channels an Astro Spectra/Saber will be useless for it.

Thank you for the response! I will give that a read and digest what i can from it.

You wouldn't believe how many people per month discuss this. Seems to me like its time this becomes common knowledge, either to scare off those not capable of it, or to keep those that are capable from mucking up some system and causing problems to others.

One good step to get this working better not listed in Mike's post is to set "system search time" to the maximum.

If you scan a the TRS from a conventional channel with the system search time set to max, you are essentially electronically selecting the trunking talkgroup directly. The radio will not leave the control channel, it will continuously trunk the system, not attempt to affiliate and unmute without the affiliation(assuming average activity on the talkgroup).

Thank you for the tip!!!! That really did make a difference.

See i knew there was a way to do it. Learning a lot on this Astro Spectra CPS also, getting better at navigating around in it.
