MTX9250 RIB-less options

Post by dependableengine »

Hi all,
The search function doesn't appear to be working, so its time to ask a question:
How fussy is the MTX9250 with RIB-less cables? Does anyone have any RIB-less recommendations for this model?

It's not a question of the MTX9250 being fussy about the cable that you use; it's a question of whether the cable communicates with the radio reliably. Aftermarket "ribless" cables use the correct communications protocols, which are not terribly complex, so there is usually no problem in that regard. However, when you add the additional complexity of USB to RS232 conversion (if you buy a USB cable), you can run into problems. You can also run into problems with reliability of the cable itself. It's a gamble.

I bought an aftermarket USB cable years ago and it worked, but I didn't like the USB drivers. Also, the wiring to facilitate flashing the radio is usually not present. I also found the wires and pins to be flimsy. But, the cable did work the few times I used it. Now I have two Motorola RKN4075 "ribless" cables and would not use anything else.

Thanks for the info, very much appreciated. The 9250 is destined for 33cm so won't be reprogrammed all that often. Since having found out that the 1250 cable is the same, which should already be in the local Big M experts' inventory anyway, I may not have to fret over the issue now.
