Jedi UHF Intrinsically safe FM approved - Made in USA

Post by g8tzl2004 »

I have an Intrinsically Safe FM approved GP900 - which just looks like an HT1000.

Its made in the USA. Model type/number is RJ502C H01RDC9AN3AN

There is a GREEN sticker on the base of the radio and battery - so the radio and battery match.

I have another Jedi GP900 which is a EUROPEAN IS CENELEC radio - this uses all 3 battery pins and requires a special battery - basically the battery has a split +ve rail for both RX (6.2v limited to 200mA) and TX (7v limited to 1A).

The "Made in USA" IS FM Approved GP900 only has 2 battery pins. I have a few questions:

- what is max TX output 1W or 4W - the European IS GP900 is limited to 1W
- Are GP900's sold in the USA - I thought the GP900 was a European model - but my GP900 is made in USA
- Can you use standard Jedi batteries?

Thanks

Motorola makes plenty of radios in the US which are for export only to other countries. When the Jedi series was first introduced it had 3 battery terminals. A few years later, production was changed to 2 battery terminals. There was a thread covering this a few years ago, but I don't remember the details. I have never seen a GP900 here in the States. Good luck. GARY N4KVE

Euro IS radios must meet the EURO standards for FM approved radios, which is no more than 1 watt TX. The radio from Europe, although it probably came out of a USA plant will have the one watt PA and a split (special) power supply requirement.

USA Intrinsically safe radios are certified to a different standard and have full output - - - that is, until January 2012, when ALL USA radios will have to meet the new Federal Standards. And guess what? No one is making an FM radio that meets the new standard that is type accepted in the USA. Yet.

There is a big pissing match going on about this, as another unfunded mandate that the Feds have forced on us. I think there is a thread here somewhere about it, or maybe at that 'RR' place....

Interestingly, I've now established that my "Made in USA" IS GP900 Jedi radio is the full 4W output - which is good news!!

I guess there are different IS standards for different applications - the Euro CENELEC standard radios are definately only 1W and use the special current limited batteries.

Maybe my IS GP900 is designed for use in "less" dangerous environments?

That is quite possible. There are numerous standards, and numerous working environments with different standards.

Things are about as complicated as the US Tax Code when it comes to OSHA compliance.
