clone m1225 to cm200

Post by droatcap »

We have a Motorola GR500 repeater using a pair of M1225 radios, one UHF and one VHF. This is for our SCADA system so there is only data transferred, no voice. After realizing we had no spares for these, I bought two CM200 radios (one UHF and one VHF). We took all four radios to a radio shop and asked them to read the 1225's and copy the settings to the CM200's. Upon getting these back, the spares do not work in the repeater setup. We tried these paired and individually to no avail. When the VHF was installed, the repeater wouldn't work at all. When only the UHF was put in, the repeater looked ok and we heard squelches as if it was communicating but no data was transferred. My question is, should it have been a simple and straightforward process to copy the programming from one to another? What might the radio shop have done wrong? We use identical programming on 1225's and CM200's in our remote telemetry sites which tells me the accessory pins are the same (or close enough) between the two models. Is there something specific to the repeater that wouldn't transfer?

Did you tell the radio shop they were going to be used in a repeater setup?

How about taking the whole thing in and telling the radio shop to make it right?

Unless you specifically told the shop it was for a repeater application, they could very well have missed programming the accessory connector pins properly...they would have likely assumed default settings would be fine, since the connectors are rarely used otherwise.

So, from these two replies, I gather that there is no sure way to copy programming from one radio to another using the Motorola programming software. Is this a correct statement? It appears that there must still be some manual settings based on the radio's intended application.

That is correct, they are two completely different software programs, for two completely different model platforms, so everything is done manually. 'Cloning' the programming can only be done between identical models of radio. Some later Motorola software packages allow a type of 'drag and drop' feature which can make moving programming between certain radio models easier than doing it manually, but the M1225 software is very old & is not capable of it at all.

Thanks for clearing this up. I now know that I need to be more specific in my requests when dealing with 1225's. I will get back with the radio shop and get this resolved. One last question. With the CM200 programming software, can the shop print out the programming (code plug?) and then use that as the guide to getting the 1225 right? Would the print out be complete or could something on the accessory plug still need custom programming based on the intended application?

Well I'm a little unclear on that, as based on your earlier posts, the M1225 is already ok..it's the CM200 that needs to be made right. Now you're asking the opposite...

Basically, the shop likely has the frequencies & associated parameters ok (PL, DPL, etc) in the CM200's currently. They just need to be made aware that you want the 2 CM200's to work together as a repeater in a GR500 config, which at a minimum means messing with the accessory connectors...I'm assuming you have a RICK box to tie them together...give that to the shop so they can ensure everything works. There are a few issues beyond programming that may make it somewhat of a challenge, but they should be able to overcome that & give you what you need at the end of the day.

You're right, I did unintentionally reverse the models in that last question. Sorry about the confusion. I will take your advice and take the entire setup to the shop when conditions allow us to take the SCADA system down for a while. Thanks for all your insight into this issue.
