I have a GP300/GTX charger - a HTN9803B rapid 1 hour charger.
Does anybody know if this is an intelligent charger which automatically detects when the battery is full OR is it just a timed one hour charger which just fast charges for 1 hour then switches off??
Even on really old, not used for years, GP300 batteries, my HTN9803B charger seems to provide about a full 1 hr charge before the green light. As a result the battery gets very hot. With other radios, old batteries tend to go "green" after a few minutes for the 1st couple of cycles.

Re: GP300 1hr HTN9803B charger - intelligent or timed?
I would not call these chargers too smart....
The charger detects when the battery is approaching a full charge by measuring the battery's thermistor. It also will switch to Complete when the battery voltage exceeds the the limit.
So, yes some batteries get hot and even when the charger switches to Complete, the charger continues to charge the battery.
There are a couple of mods to make the charger more comparable with the batteries.
Change the battery thermistor detection point so the battery does not get so hot before the charger switches to 'Complete".
Reduce the Complete charge rate so the battery will not over charge.

Thanks Will
Am I right in thinking that a smart Delta V charger only uses the thermister as a secondary backup in case the small voltage drop when a battery is full is not detected....but the HTN9803B charger basically uses the thermister as the primary detection - when the battery heats up it switches off
OK on the mods - I will check them out

Good I will get the Mods to you soon.g8tzl2004 wrote: OK on the mods - I will check them out
This charger series does NOT have the Delta V function.
