12.5khz required for GMRS and FRS?

Post by wkr518 »

I know some 2 watt GMRS and .5w FRS have 12.5khz channels already , but will the FCC NB mandate also cover these areas?

FRS was always narrowband only.

GMRS is not mandated to NB - but this could change as there are some major changes being considered by the FCC for GMRS. That being said some users choose to run in narrow and some in wide - particularly on the shared FRS channels.

I believe at least some if not most of the bubble pack cowboys run nb on all channels, including the GMRS-only higher power channels.

NO.

The FRS are already 2.5 k dev "Narrowband"

The GMRS are 5 K dev and 25 K spacing and will stay that way.

I searched and search the FCC site to no avail on this. Did find FRS reference to being 12.5 channels on the bubblepack stuff @ .5w
Not requiring GMRS to go 12.5 is lame IMHO.

How so? GMRS is a good home for a lot of cheap surplused wideband-only commercial equipment, and I filed comments to that effect when the rulemaking was proposed last year.

There is no mandate for GMRS to NB, but there is nothing saying that you can't NB if you want to in the case of putting up your own GMRS repeater.

It is like they are making exceptions to the new rules.I have only met 1-3 GMRS license holders here locally and all 3 were using the GMRS channels in some capacity of business on VHF and UHF. One guy was using his UHF GMRS radios at his work at an adult nursing home.1 was using it for Port operations in a busy port downtowm and the 3rd used his GMRS at the hotel he was a manager for.
I do not file complaints against users as long as they do not cause my systems or user harm/interference.
I will find the rules and read them again but it does not sound like business (IG) is supposed to using GMRS

Wrong GMRS is OK for business if you had a license for one before the changeover in the 90's. We have numerous bus companies in the area that have had GMRS licenses for nearly 30 years. There was some talk of GMRS being forced into Narrow Band last year, but I believe it has been squelched for now, too many businesses actually using the frequencies nationwide that don't want to change to NB. There actually was a FCC comment period about it last year.

I read the current rules for GMRS and it does not mention conducting business of any sort on the channels.I paid my $85 to the FCC and just waiting for the next step.I have plenty of UHF EX500 and 750 and a few base radios, so now to put them to good use here.
