MCS 2000 "Programming Icon"?

MCS 2000 "Programming Icon"?

Recently gave a friend an MCS 2000 for his vehicle. It's a Model III unit.

I noticed the radio always has the programming icon lit. It's that thing that looks like a fat, wavy "S", or perhaps an unraveled scroll.

Anyone have any idea what causes this? It's not on in my vehicle MCS... I believe the radio with the issue has firmware around R05.40.
