AstroLab 3.04.00 com port failure

Have installed the depot software om my machine, running on dos 7.01, when attemting to read a radio i'm getting a com port timeout error, have attempted to change to other com ports. When using other com ports i get a busy line error.
Have tried the software on 2 XP machines , a Win2000 laptop, and a Win98 laptop, i get the exact same errors.
Using the rib and cables i normally use everyday for programming, tried the rib on both flash and normal modes, nothing seems to help.
Can anyone shed some light on this problem. At this point i'm clueless.
