I am getting some work done on some Motorola radio's and was wondering what the going shop rates are?
The local shop charges $70.00/hr (CDN) (about $45US). Is this in line?
What are the going rates for a Motorola shop.
Thanks in advance.

It's in line, depending on where you are in Canada. We are located in the Maritimes, and our shop rate is $60/hr, with a minimum charge of $40 to even look at your radio. These are Canadian prices.

Hi:

Shop Rates?

In todays world, you really get what you
pay for and depending on the Service Shop
in question, I have seen some as low as
$15.00 (hr.) to 125.00 ( hr. ) & up, Most Shops that have a 60,000.00 a year qualified Two-Way Service Tech is probably going to reflect a HT / Mobile repair from 50.00 to 200.00 on a average, and Motorola's price is about $150.00 higher than the above.

Todays radios require alot of special attention such as a ESD workstation, proper
tools, Lots of Programming RSS & Hardware, a good Service Monitor, Spectrum Analizer, RF mesurinmg equipment, ect.

And not to knock a IFR or others, but a Tek
490 Series is a bit superior to the IFR's and
can see RF elements in a noise floor in a
superior manor to the Spectrum Displays in the atypical service monitor.

Giving a 3000.00 radio like a XTS to a CB style shop can be risky, but if you are
unsure of the shop / person, you can try
Dun and Bradstreet to see if they are at least listed, the BBB to see if any complaints have been made, or most of the
perosns here have shops ( me too ) that are
more than qualified to fix Two-way radios.

Always ask to see if the Tech in question has
any appropriate documents such as a General
Radio Telephone Certificate, CET ( Certified
Electronic Tech ), and any Class Ham License,
or anything else that could support them.

Most persons are proud of thier achivements
over the years, and if they have been in business for some time, they should be reliable.

Always keep in mind, a bigger Two-Way shop has a horrible overhead operating costs, and
well, the repairs of any radio will reflect
that cost issue.

In short, the 60,000 a year tech is getting
paid 5000.00 per month, 1250.00 per week, and
that works out to be 250.00 per day, or about
31.00 per hour. Shops have to make monies, so
the rate is the customer is charged is about
twice the above. 55.00 65.00 per hour for a
qualified person, but most shops will work on
a " flat rate basis " as sometimes a tech will work 5-6 hours on a radio to make 125.00-150.00....Some monies are better than
no monies.

If you have should live in a area with none
or only 1 shop, be aware, many persons here
will fix your radio if you send it to them.

Motorola does a bang up Mail order fix-it business.

$60,000 a year? Sigh, sometimes I wonder why I moved back to the East Coast. Even the most qualified people make 30% less than that out here, unless they own or partly own their own shop.

$60 K a year? Where do I sign and where's the closest Ryder or U-Haul?

$70.95/hr plus parts here. Really, anything less than $50/hr probably won't serve most repair and programming needs.

Shop rate here is $50 per hour and field service rate is $80 first hour and $60 per hour.

Los Angeles County and surroundig areas.

Some shops in this area charge up to $125 per hour. Most charge from $70 and up per hour in the "shop" and field rates are much higher.
