M1225 refurb - thermal paste

Post by sataraid1 »

I'm refurbishing an M1225 that looks like someone spilled a Coke into it. Everything inside the radio around the front speaker area was covered in a brown sticky goo. I tossed the speaker, but everything else has cleaned up all right.

In the process of washing the chassis/heat sink, most of the thermal paste has been removed. The layer of paste on the bottom of the main board components is still intact.

This radio will only be used to monitor. No transmitting. Will it still be necessary for me to reapply a fresh layer of thermal paste, or are the extra heat dissipation measures needed mostly for the heat generated during transmitting? Is it possible that the amount of paste left on the mainboard is enough?

If not, what are the specifications for the proper paste I need to use for the M1225 and/or Maxtrac/GM300 radios? I've caught the name Wakefield in searching this forum, but no mentions of a specific type/item for this application.

Thanks.

I'd recommend that you replace the heat sink compound, because someone after you may use the radio for transmit and experience PA failure(either audio or RF). The M1225 manual does not list any part number for the thermal compound, however every heat sink compound that I've ever seen is nothing more than zinc oxide loaded silicone grease. Wakefield makes it. Motorola sells it(p/n 1180382B13) by the tube, and it's available from numerous other sources. Clean off all the old with a swab and isopropyl, apply the correct amount of new, and reassemble.

What radios do you own?: XTS2500, XTS5000, and MTS2000

replace it, it's cheap and as others said, you never know if you sell/trade it the new owner would need it! I prefer the Arctic Silver, Radio Shaft sells it, it's expensive but it takes a very thin layer and it has some great heat transfer capability. All the gamer PC guys use it on their overclocked CPU's, along with elaborate fans and stuff.

Thanks for the responses. I'm pleased to know that, for a change, I can just buy "off the shelf" at Radio Shack.

Anybody got an extra speaker laying around they want to get rid of?
