DTMF tones on XTS5000

Post by N4KVE »

Hello. On my other radios [MTS2000, Astro Saber, & XTS3000] to xmit DTMF tones I have to push the number buttons while squeezing the PTT switch. However, on my XTS5000 if I just push the number buttons, the radio xmit's those tones without touching the PTT. Is this a characteristic of the 5000, or can a setting be changed by using CPS to make the 5000 work like my other radios? Sometimes when I pick up my 5000, I push a button by mistake which xmits tones. I'd like to prevent this from happening. GARY N4KVE

Gary,

I believe you disable "hot keypad". It is something that you can change in the CPS to disable.

What firmware revision are you running? Hot keypad has to be enabled in the conventional personality, and you need at least R08 firmware.

When I got the radio the f/w was 6. I don't remember if it did it then. I didn't really notice this until after the f/w was upgraded. Now it's 14. While I've never programmed a 5000 yet, since mine's FPP I have done AS3's & XTS3000's. Would it be in the same place as them on a per channel basis? Thanks. GARY N4KVE

Hi Gary,

I think there is a setting in CPS that might be causing this, but unfortunately I can't test at the moment and the CPS help isn't really clear.

The first function I see that applies to Conventional personalities is called Hot Keypad:
Allows the radio-user the ability to dial telephone numbers using the radio’s keypad, even when the radio is not in Phone Mode. This Hot mode is initiated by pressing and holding the PTT button while dialing the required numbers. This feature applies while operating on the current Conventional Personality.
There is a second per-personality setting called DTMF Mic Enable, which I think is causing the behavior you described. The CPS help file says:
Enables the radio-user’s ability to directly enter DTMF tones (from the radio’s keypad). These DTMF tones are then transmitted for the purpose of gaining repeater access, accessing phone mode, or for simple control situations where DTMF tones are transmitted to a simple DTMF decoder that then accomplishes a desired action.
You might want to hit the radio with CPS and check on the status of these two options in your conventional personalities.
The bandsplit is only a suggestion.

I know I'm a few days late to the party but I just saw this thread. My XTS2500 was doing the exact same thing that Gary's XTS5000 is doing, and I'm almost positive that DTMF Mic Enable is what you want to turn off (as bezking said). If I remember correctly, Hot Keypad means that you can transmit DTMF tones whenever the radio is keyed (which is what you probably want), and DTMF Mic Enable means that it transmits whenever you hit one of the buttons. Very annoying.

Looks like it's time to purchase a serial cable. Thanks for all the help. GARY N4KVE

Hello GARY N4KVE,

I am trying to configure XTS 5000 to xmit DTMF tones, to hear them on the same channel on another XTS 5000. For now, it does'nt work. Do you know at wich parameter I have to pay attention ? Everyone contribution is of course welcome. ;)

If, with your help, I can make it work, I will be intersted to do the same emixxion of DTMF tones with a XTS 5000, but to hear them with a MTS 2000.

Thanks a lot in advance. :)

Sorry, I haven't got a cable yet, so I have yet to program the radio. I just make sure I don't touch the buttons when picking up the radio. GARY N4KVE

You have to go into the particular personality for the channel you want DTMF on, and enable "Hot Keypad". "DTMF Mic Enable" will indeed cause the pad to transmit DTMF tones without having to key the radio.

Hey, hello everyone !

I was really busy last month (work...) so my bad to answer you this late... ;)

I did'nt succeed to make DTMF tones to work, so if you got a cable to program the radio, can you tell me which parameters you've got or to send me a ".cpg" which is a programmation profile for Motorola XTS (without your frequences and network access codes of course).

Thanks for your help, d119. I tried to make the DTMF tones working with Hot Keypad alone, and with DTMF Mic Enable without success.

This by creating another Conventional Personality, moving to Non-ASTRO Voice/Signal Tx/Rx type, and enabling Hot Keypad. And of course, I create a channel with this Conventional Personality paired. Channel in direct mode, same Rx and Tx frequency.

At a time, I thought I heard some really low noises like DTMF tones with a volume max on XTS 5000, but now I think it was only some noise...

Thanks in advance to all who will try to help me ! :) And to those who already did. ;)

Ludo,

What version firmware and DSP are in your portable?

d119,

It is R04.50.00 for firmware and the same for DSP.

You definitely need to upgrade the HOST and DSP on that radio. While I cannot say for sure, that's likely the issue.

Yep, I believe DTMF was added in R08.

Oh ? It would be pretty convenient if it is only the firmware.

I'm not going to work before a week, but I am not sure to dispose of last firmwares. I am sure to have up to v14 of the software, but is the firmware integrated on the CD ? Don't know...

Do you know where it usually is ?

Thanks a lot for your help to both of you. :)

tvsjr is pretty knowledgeable in these things, so if he concurs with my diagnosis, I think that pretty much answers it. You need to upgrade the firmware.

In order to upgrade the firmware, you'll need to contact an MSS and order the firmware upgrade. The upgrade consists of a CD with the firmware on it, and a flash dongle that goes in your USB port to authorize the upgrade.

Current firmware for the XTS 5000 is R16.00.01 with DSP 16.00.01. Check with your local vendor or whomever you purchased the radio from and they can probably help you. I'd also try talking with escomm here on the board and see if he could be of some assistance in this matter. He is a vendor and can order it for you as well.
