VHF 2.5 kHz radio/RSS matrix?

Post by DavidJ »

I am trying to assist some local agencies who would like to use some of the new splinter channels. All VHF conventional analog narrow. Coordination and licensing are well understood, but we don't have a good handle on which of their new/old radios can handle 2.5 kHz channel steps. We are talking about Sabers, System Sabers, Astro Sabers and Astro Spectras, HT1000 family radios, MT/MR/XTS1500s and possibly XTS2500s (maybe others too)

We know that some Astro Sabers will do 2.5 kHz. Some non-Astro Spectras will too, but not all. Is there a way to tell when rummaging through shelves of old radios? What about RSS? Some of the agency's versions are old and they don't really want to buy new (some are NLA anyway).

Any info on establishing what radios and RSS are required to do this?

Thanks

What radios do you own?: XTS2500, XTS5000, and MTS2000

You can safely say all the MT1500/XTS1500/2500's will do all splinter channels.
HT1000's, only the DN models will do the splinter channels.
Astro Sabers, if they have 1MEG VOCONS they should be able to do splinter channels, provided firmware supports it.
Astro Spectras have to have "12.5KHZ" on the tag IIRC.

Analog Sabers, Systems Sabers, etc are all wideband, no splinter channels- no way to upgrade.

Thanks for the info. I think the tag says "2.5" not "12.5" because frequency step and bandwidth are two different issues. All of the Astro Spectras for instance will do narrow (11K3F3E emission) on 5 or 6.25 kHz channel steps but not all will do 2.5 kHz steps needed to get to all the frequencies in Part 90.

Okay, the question still stands. Especially for mobiles, there's no way except the label to tell whether an Astro Spectra, for instance, will do 2.5 kHz steps or not. The Motorola http://www.motorola.com/web/Business/_D ... 0Guide.pdf does not address this either, unless it's safe to assume that anything listed as being "12.5 kHz compatible" will do 2.5 kHz steps. I don't think so -- the GM300 is listed as compatible and won't do 2.5, for instance, as far as I know. Anyone with actual data out there?
