I have recently purchased a Spectra VHF Model T83FWA7HA9AK to replace a downed T83GXA7HA9Ak and the new one is looking for the 9000e head and my setup is for an A7 head. Is there a workaround so that I can pull the codeplug from the new radio without connecting a A9 or 9000e head up to it to read? Witch I don't have. But I really need this radio for my patrol car and can't program it. Been ff the board for awhile and seem to be loosing touch with my Motorola side for some reason, because I just can't remember.
Any and All help is appreciated. Thank You.

Re: Need Help With Spectra programming
If it is already setup as a A9 head the RSS has to read the head.
What is wrong with the T83GXA7HA9AK ?

Re: Need Help With Spectra programming
I dont suppose I could get a codeplug that was similar to clone into it?

So get the capacitors replaced and put it back into service. It doesn't take a rocket man to work on those radios. There are a number of people on here that replace the caps in the Spectra radios. It will probably cost more to ship it than what it will cost you to get the caps replaced.

Well that is something I my do in the future when I have time. But I already have the new radio and I am trying to get it into service. Has anyone ever tried the same model codeplug clone theory? I wonder if that would work?

Re: Need Help With Spectra programming
All A9 Spectras with MLM firmware 6.xx or greater have the capability to select "Standard", "Advanced", or "9000" under "Control Head" in the regular programming software. "Standard" or "Advanced" are A7 head options. But to make the switch in a radio that is programmed to use a 9000 head you have to have that type of head connected to the radio when you read it, or RSS will bomb with a communications error. However, you can use ANY Spectra A9/9000 head to let the RSS read - it doesn't have to be the same head that was originally used on the radio. So almost any $30 eBay special Spectra A9 head will work.
The other option is to read the radio with Lab RSS and "bitbang" the A9 head selection in the radio down to A7, but that can be a little tricky if you've never messed with Spectra Lab before - do a board search for "moflag" and you'll get some good background. The easiest and safest option is to just find a cheap A9 head somewhere and connect it to the radio long enough to let it read.
edit: Your original post seems to indicate that you use this radio on county public safety frequencies. Radioreference shows you guys using analog VHF except for the city of Okmulgee which uses MotoTRBO. So I have to point out that this Spectra -and any Spectra, in fact- will be useless once your county narrowbands its analog VHF channels. Now might be the time to think about investing in a TRBO mobile, which will let you talk to the city (if they want to let you play) and still handle all of the county analog channels in narrowband plus your 2-meter ham stuff.
