MCS2000 Questions

Post by CaptMuxlow »

I got a UHF MCS2K in the mail today. Has a fail code of Defective IC. Is there a way to find out what one is blown? Or a diagram of their location?

Second. Is it possible to convert my VHF model 1 control head to a spare model 2 i have sitting around?

Look up the fail code in the service manual, or post it here. If it is a FAIL 01/90, that is pretty general and diagnosing the problem without physical access to it is next to impossible.

I think Fail 01/90 generally means there's a communications issue between the control head and the radio. That's not to say that an IC isn't at fault, but I would try another control head of the same type and see if you have better results.

Sometimes if the control cable (if the radio is a remote mount) has been jerked around, the pins that hold the transceiver connector on the board can crack, causing the fail code. You could try opening up the radio, fluxing those pins and just touch the tip of a soldering pencil to each one to ensure there are no hairline fractures.

I have seen this problem twice on two VHF high power radios.

All mine are front mount radios

Any other common problems or will it come down to testing each IC and find the faulty one?

I had close to a 20% 1/90 failure rate of Model-1 dashmount VHF MCS2000s out of the box in a shipment of over 100 radios. They all went back for depot/warranty service with the only reported part being replaced was the entire uni-board.

I hate that radio, sorry.

Generally it's one of two things: the mating socket on the uniboard needs to be resoldered or the controller IC is brain-dead.

Head swaps between models 1/2/3 require s-record manipulation. You can pop any head onto any radio for powerup testing and programming but you won't get all of the button functions.
