Trunking Network/System - Smartnet Type II

I was wondering. On a trunking network is anything transmitted, even if you are not holding the PTT button?

Not trying to be rude, but life will be MUCH easier for you in the long run. With a scanner there is no need / worry about EVER transmitting, or affiliating with the system.

Lol. I just need to know if it transmits when it first connects, hell if I have to I'll write my own script to monitor the transmissions and see if/what im sending out. Just wanted to see if somebody already knew ;p -

You need to do a search for the information. There are a number of sites that have a good detail of just how a trunking system works.

To give you a simple answer, yes the radio will respond to a request to identify now and then to a system request. When you transition from one tower to another, the radio will affiliate unless it is a simulcast system.

You don't need to build squat. Just buy this:

Then you can safely monitor the TRS, oh and if your in Florida and you want to listen in your vehicle there is a statute that forbids it uless you fall into specific criteria.

IF you had the system key, a properly programmed radio will key up when turned on, or the talk group is changed.

Interesting. I never knew about that law, thats retarded though. do you know when you logon to the network (trunking) do you get a different id each time? Like if I log on and im ID 1...will the next time I log on will is it possible that id be ID 5?

No. The radio's ID is programmed using CPS and remains constant.

If this guy is dead set on doing this (which I don't advocate), he should just open up his MTS and unsolder & remove the PA module. Enough said. That way there is no possibility whatsoever on God's green Earth that the radio will produce ANY power. Even the exciter won't make it to the antenna port. Then he essentially has what he wants - a Motorola scanner that is 100% safe. Granted it's pretty extreme, but it's also completely safe, and can be proven with any watt meter.

I for one am getting fairly tired of this same subject appearing by this same author (no offense). Since you are clearly hell-bent on doing what you want to do, quit discussing it and just do what I've stated above, and go about your business.

As far as you discovering a "safe" way to do this, well, that's the safe way. A lot of us, myself included, maintain and work on trunked networks and their subscriber units for a living and have a very intimate knowledge of what works, what doesn't, what can be done and what cannot. Pull the PA out, and you now have essentially just a receiver. Want to take it further? Pull out the exciter. Just don't go too far with the VCO...
