Motorola XTL-2500

Post by sbarlow »

Does anyone know if the high power (25-110W) xtl-2500 comes with remote mount. I need to mount the r/t under back seats and just the control head on dash. Moto's web site is unclear.

The high power only comes in remote mount. Mid power is dash or remote.

You didn't mention if your obtaining this unit complete or putting it together from different sources.

Be aware that there is a difference in the control head between the XTL2500 and the XTL5000. The 2500 uses the all black M5 control head. The 5000 uses the silver front 05 control head. You can not swap them between models. Functionally they are the same.

Also when you wire up the DC power to the control head, make sure you put the small red wire from the control head power cable to +12 volts all the time. The yellow wire can be controlled by the ignition switch. Not doing so will cause an excess battery drain when the vehicle is shut off.

In the interest of pedantry, the 5000 can use the O5 front panels, which either have a silver or dark charcoal grey surround around the display. The old heads will be marked XTL5000 - these are the units you typically see on the used market. The newer O5s are compatible with the APX mobiles and will simply say "O5".

Thanks for the info. Here's what I'm doing. I'm now running a shop providing comms for Gov't contractor in middle east. In 2007, half the fleet was outfitted with XTL-5000's, but only 50W radios. It's time to replace the variety of older 9000's, MVS's, and KMC's in the other 350 vehicles with one type (up to date) radio. Because of location and missions, I need the higher power radio, and will eventually use trunking. The r/t will be mounted under the rear seat so just the control head is up front for a "lower profile"".

So what's the problem? All the high power radios will come in a trunk mount configuration. You can program them from the mic connector using the ribless cable or you can program them from the DB25 connector on the front of the radio. The normal way is to use the mic connector on the control head.

Just make sure you pay attention to my comments about the DC power cable at the control head. The yellow wire can go to the ignition switch, but the red wire from the control head needs to go to a hot all the time feed. If not, you will kill the battery in the vehicle. The radio will draw over 700 ma when the vehicle is shut off. If you connect the red wire to the ignition feed also, you will be jump starting the vehicle all the time. I can tell you from personal experience on this one.
