Weird MCS2000 Fail 01/90

Post by escomm »

A friend of mine has a cable of unknown origin that puts the MCS2000 radio in Fail 01/90 after a power cycle, they insist it's OEM but I'm not convinced. Removing the program cable from the mic jack clears the error immediately. Inserting the cable doesn't cause issues until the radio reboots, like after a read. They are using the cable with an adapter with a part number of 5880385B34. Basic googling shows it to be some sort of an adapter for an AstroTac comparator.

Beyond this the cable seems to work fine for reading and writing, the radio does take the codeplug update after a write, so this is really for our own edification. Radios are dash mount, one an 800MHz model 2 and the other a model 3.

Any thoughts?

I would guess that something is getting screwed up with the control head multiplexing that switches the mic jack between normal, program, and keyload modes. Perhaps something in the cable is messing with the current sensing on pin 1 of the mic jack, which controls part of the multiplexing.

But that's just a wild guess...
