Can anyone tell me how to link Quantar (VHF) repeaters? I need to get across approx 400 Km of desert.
Thanks

Digital or analog or both? Line of sight path?
Re: Linking Quantar repeaters
400km - not much chance of LOS there without a lot of elevation. Boy oh boy, that's a distance. I think you will have to try a low band link of some kind. Even that is going to be a challenge with atmospherics and terrain. Sat link would work if you have the financial budget.
Re: Linking Quantar repeaters
Not only that, but he's going to have a hell of a time with it if it's digital...
Re: Linking Quantar repeaters
No kidding. If he sends me the lat and long of two fixed points, I can plot different bands to try to find something that might work.
Re: Linking Quantar repeaters
It's analog right but will add digital in 1-2 years. Sorry, it won't be 400 km all in one shot, It would be 200km from point A to point B, another 100km from B to C, and another 100km from C to D.
Re: Linking Quantar repeaters
Those are still some long hops all beyond the horizon. You will have to use low band of some type. You might get usable analog audio, but it's doubtful you'll achieve a data link.

Could do it using Back to Back Quantars at intermediate sites as you'll need at least one maybe two back to back sites intermediate site over that distance. You can use the RA/RT mode in RSS. You'll need V24 boards which clip on the 4W Wireline board. Use a Crossed V24 serial cable between the back to back Quantars front panel V24 sockets. This will take care of the PTT both ways and also cross the Astro digital signal. Now you have repeated on the digital signal both ways. If you also need Analog both ways just cross TX to RX between both back to back repeaters using 4 wires The V24 link will cross connect the PTT's & COR's within the serial data stream. This set up will handle both Analog & digital. The advantage with using ASTRO digital mode is there no Audio frequency roll off or noise addition as happens when you do multiple back to back hops in Analog only mode.
