XTL5000 excessive white noise with carrier

Post by BIODTL1997 »

I'm surprised to find no posts anywhere about this so I'm thinking this is a unique problem to my radio only. Analog or digital, I'm hearing way too much hiss come though the speaker regardless of signal strength. I can have the volume at 0 and this is still audible to the same level as when the volume is up significantly(its constant). I've tried every imaginable volume setting combo in CPS and have no results.

It's an S split 5000 with a O5 head (same problem before, with a W7) and is up to date in firmware (R16)

Has anyone else encountered this and is there maybe a softpot on one of the boards that can be adjusted?

Thanks!

I haven't played with the XTL series yet. But, if it's anything like older radios, it's a leaking cap in the snubber on the speaker output line, or an open bypass cap that sets the negative feedback and gain on the audio pa. If it is present all the time (even when squelch is closed), it's a leaking mute gate.

It's only audible on carrier detect when passing audio to the speaker. I guess I'll have to take it to a shop if it gets too unbearable.

Thanks
