GM300 Rib Comm issue

Post by cms1126 »

Ok so be fore i go any further i do know the dangers of using a non Motorola rib and i have a feeling that may be my problem but i thought id ask anyways. I am attempting to reprogram a couple gm300's using one of the kawa mall ribs and a home made rib to radio cable. The rib works great with programming system sabers but wont connect to the gm300's. Ive made and remade the cable thinking that could be the issue but no luck. The diagram i have for it says 2 wires go from the db25 connector to the radio and then jumper 2 other pins on the connector. i don't have the pin numbers in front of me but i can get them if it helps. i am using true dos on an old Toshiba satellite the RSS worked before when i programmed them. I also tried using the GM/GP300 CPS in Windows XP with no luck, as well as trying the rib on a gr1225 with the proper software. Am I missing something?

Thanks,
Conner

What radios do you own?: HT1550's, X9000's, CDM1550's

if I remember correctly you can use the maxtrac rss for that gm300, have you tried that?

The RIB cable is the same one that would work on a MaxTrac or Radius mobile radio. At the radio's modular jack, pin 4 is ground, pin 7 is the programming line. These go to two pins on the DB25, and you do need a jumper between two other pins on the DB25.

Make sure the program is set to use the correct serial port, usually it's COM1 but it could also be set to COM2. Check this in the Setup (F9) menu in the program.

Some programs offer a COMM CHECK function in the Setup menu; run that and make sure communications are working to a radio and/or RIB.

The software really wants to run in pure MS-DOS. Most versions of Windows won't pass all data through the serial port directly to a user program. This makes the programming software try to share the serial port, resulting in missing data to and from the radio.

If the RIB doesn't have a battery in it, or an external power pack attached, it probably won't work with any programming cable that only has two (2) wires in it, such as the one for a MaxTrac/Radius/GM300. The RIB needs power from somewhere and the computer won't provide it, nor will any of those radios. The Spectra radio does provide +12V to feed the RIB, but I don't know about the Saber. Many of the so-called RIB-less cables depend on power coming from the computer or the radio, and these won't work on all computers or radios.
