Narrow Band RX with a Wideband signal

i am about to change the radio in my truck. and some of the channels that i monitor only are still wide band. i was thinking of just programming the radio narrow and not worrying about it

how does wideband signal sound on a narrow band receiver

It depends on the model. A NB Motorola or Kenwood tends to sound "crunchy" receiving a loud WB, but receive average traffic okay. If a boomer is on the mic, or someone with good mic technique is talking (like a dispatcher with a headset), you can expect to hear crunchies. NB Icoms tend to mute during loud WB. Pokes big holes in the conversation as the squelch clamps on the peaks. Pretty horrible sounding. NB Quantars waltz right through WB even when they are loud like there was no difference. However, MTR's get crunchy.
