Laptop Question

Post by N4KVE »

I have a few Dell laptops, Inspiron, & Latitude. When the laptop is running, & plugged into the wall [110 volts] but has a good battery, is the laptop running off the battery while being charged, or is the laptop running off 110 volts. Reason I'm asking, I was on the desktop earlier, & the power went off for a second. The desktop turned off, & booted up, coming back to life. If I was programming a radio, well we all know what would have happened. So if I was using my laptop, & the power went off, would the laptop continue to run on battery power w/o interrupting the writing process, or would I be screwed. Every radio I own has it's archive saved on the laptop, so should a radio get bricked, is it a simple matter of taking the bricked radio, finding it's archive in the laptop, & writing it to the radio, thus saving it? Thanks for any help. GARY N4KVE

A laptop will not restart in the same situation you described as long as it has a good battery obviously. Can't answer specifically if it is running the battery all the time or not but again it will not power down.

Of course you should check your power options settings as well for shut down circumstances ,etc.

I've had that happen a few times where the 110 was interrupted but the laptop continued seamlessly on battery. I've also run laptops on AC adapter with no battery in place so it appears the AC adapter charges the battery and powers the laptop simultaneously.

As long as the supplied battery is charged enough when a main fails, the laptop should run without a problem, the switching is performed automatically as is the charging of the battery when the A.C is active.
You should never see anything indicative of a 'brown-out' if the power switches from A.C to battery...all should be seamless.

My programming cart has an old APS250 or something like that on it, with a new battery, and I use THAT as a power strip. Everything goes into there, and then to the mains in the wall. Dept of Redundancy Dept. :-)

My Dell Latitide D630 and Toughbook both kept going without a hitch when AC power failed during many a brown outs. Another reason I keep a fresh Duracell in my RLN4008B at all times .

If you don't want a brick, invest in a UPS supporting the power supply, RIB, and computer.

I used to use a wall wart for the rib, but now I use a 9 volt battery. Thanks for the help guys. GARY N4KVE
