Syntor X9000 transmit problems. HELP
Moderator: Queue Moderator
Hey guys. I have a question. I have a Syntor X9000 vhf, 110 64 channel radio and it's been working fine up until lately. I got in an accident about two weeks ago and the truck has been in the shop until this last Friday. When I got it back, everything seemed fine until someone told me that my signal kept dropping out. SO, I put the scanner on one of the channels and began to transmit. There is definately something wrong as the radio when transmitting sounds like wind noise and some popping, even though there is no wind. Sometimes when I hit a bump going down the road, the noise gets bad for a second then stablizes, but never completely goes away. I checked the mic connections and all of the cables connections which are tight. Incoming signals are perfect with no noise that I can tell. I tried two different mics that I know are good, and the same thing happens. Where should I start? Am I screwed? Should I get a new trunk unit or can this be fixed? Any help would be appreciated.

I am by no means an expert here. But the one thing I could recommend is Check your ground. I don't just mean your connections, hook up a multi-meter, or the like and verify that your ground is still there. Sometimes the body shop moves things around a little bit, without thinking about what you have setup and your ground may no longer be good anymore. Just a thought where to start.
If you were in an accident, and had someone work on your car, they probably moved around, and replaced some components, and you self-install stuff like the radio might not work as well as it did. I'd consider re-wiring the power with new cable. That's probably your best bet. Yeah, it would be a pain in the butt, but you'd know everything was working.

If you had any paint work done, check to make sure you do not have any electrical connections riding on a fresh coat of paint and not making good electrical contact. Do not forget to check the antenna connector body ground and coax. The accident or the body shop could have damaged them.
If possible, temporarily use a magnetic mount antenna with its own coax to see if the problem goes away.

Thanks for the tips guys but everything is good in terms of power and grounding connections. I replaced the antenna today anyway because I wanted a 1/4 wave to fit under drive throughs, etc. All electrical, harness, speaker and mic connections are good. I checked the SWR sensor and all antenna connections that I could find and they all seem tight. VCO lock is good, output power is steady, it's just popping and noisy on transmit only. Receive is absolutely 100% kick butt. I figured if the finals were going bad, they would go fast but who knows. Anybody got spare X9000 parts for a 150-174 radio? Thanks for any additional help you could give guys. I appreciate the suggestions.

As an afterthought, I remember awhile back (on the old Batlabs) that someone had the same problem (on a different radio), and it was the alternator going bad.
Was the alternator replaced, or perhaps damaged in the accident? I would check for obvious physical damage and for haha's, put a meter on it and key your radio up and see what happens..

Guys, one more quick question. Do I need to ground the body of this radio seperately from the power ground to the battery? I know it's a crazy question, but I truely don't know if I should be doing that. This problem is intermittent. Sometimes, the radio is perfect, than all the sudden, pop crackle pop, then back to normal again. I'm wondering if the contacts on the wiring harness need to be cleaned, but it doesn't explain the fact that his problem occurs only on transmit and not receive. hmmmm. What to do here. This thing had me totally stumped. I'm about ready just to pay a shop to fix the thing.

Hey guys, I figured it out! I went all through the radio, trying to find some loose cable or something. The last thing I checked was the VCO circuit. I pulled the cover off of the vco circuit and started using a small piece of plastic to test the solder joints. VIOLA! I started messing with the transmit pads and wow, what a noise. The solder joints were bad so I resoldered a wire across the pads, and perfect quieting signal. Put her all back together and did some checks. Worked great. I'm glad I figured this one out, I thought I was going to have a $400.00 paper weight. Happy Thanksgiving.
