Saber III - Early Pentium/ Pure DOS - will it prog OK?

Post by g8tzl2004 »

The floppy drive on my 386 is going bad so I'm now using a very early Pentium running pure DOS and Win 98.

The laptop is a Thinkpad 380 and works great programming MT1000's , Maxtrac's etc using pure DOS.

I just want to check whether its OK to use the early Pentium to program a Saber III?

Thanks

When I was assigned to the portable screen room the slow computer was a Pentium P100. This worked mostly for Sabers but it would not transfer the tuning values.

I scrounged a DEC 486-50 from the junk pile and it worked perfectly.

Many will say Pentiums work fine but for me it only somewhat worked. We used ver 6.28 custom, amd ver 7.01.

Years ago I once ran Saber version 6 on an old Leading Edge 8088 machine. It took forever to run and do what it was
told to do but in the end it worked fine. Right now I have a 60 mHz box which is internally slowed to 25 mHz
running DOS programs and it does fine. Reasonably slow speed, a serial port, and a machine booted from pure
DOS, such as 6.22, always seems to work fine on Sabers running versions 6 or 7 of the RSS.

I use that exact laptop with ME on it and boot to dos with a ME startup disk and that machine does those all day long. P200's are the only ones i've had problems with

UPDATE: My early Pentium MMX Thinkpad 380XD laptop (dated around 1998) works great using pure DOS.

I use a 1 Ghz Centrino CF-18 Toughbook. I boot to dos from a USB 1 gig thumb drive. It works fine.
