Maxtrac Scan function

Post by w4yj »

Hello. I am new to the group and just picked up a 6 channel UHF Maxtrac radio. The EXIT button does not make the radio scan. This is the 6 channel version. What is needed to get it to scan. Also, I understrand that you can not use a chassis ground for an external speaker or it will damage the radio. I am hard of hearing and I have my dual band 2meter/440 Kenwood audio run to the Stereo input jack on my car stereo so I can hear the radio better. What would be the best way to disable the internal speaker besides unplugging the jumper on pin 15/16 on the back? I need audio out to run to the car radio auxilary input jack.

Thanks

Steve

Pin 11 on the 16 pin connector is RX audio. Use a coupling capacitor and the level is compatible with Line In on most audio amps. This RX audio is NOT controlled by the volume control.

Or off the hi side of the speaker, pins 15 and 16, thru a coupling capacitor. The Maxtrac speaker does have the low side to ground using a single sided audio amp in the radio.

Hi Will,

Then can I use the ground pin on the 16 pin connector for either the low side of the speaker or usethe high side of pin 11 with a coupling cap and also the ground pin for line audio? I read somewhere that if you hook the speaker low side to ground it will smoke the radio!!

Thank you for the quick reply!

Welcome Steve. Someone should read the radio to see if scan is even available in it. Some had it, some didn't.

For the rx audio, Will told you what you needed to do. Pin 11 is the line level rx output. Pin 7 is ground. Hook those up to your stereo through the appropriate isolation as he instructed.

Pulling the 15-16 jumper will disable the internal speaker.

You cannot smoke this radio by grounding the speaker. On some models that is true, but on the Maxtrac it isn't.

There is a full pinout of the 16 pin plug at Batlabs.

You might need a HUB for scan to work properly.
