MCS2000 - Control Head Button problem - Corrupted Codeplug?

Post by g8tzl2004 »

I have successfuly programmed a recently acquired UHF MCS2000.

This is the 1st time I have had to use CPS R02.02.00. My other MCS2000's all programmed OK using DOS R05.07.00 but the new MCS2000 gave me a "Codeplug too New" message using the DOS RSS :(

I have initially just started with a few channels and plan on building up the codeplug with more Zones , MPL etc

Everything appears to be OK with the MCS2000 BUT I have just viewed the "Saved to Disk" codeplug and noticed that the control head key functions are NOT where they should be...most appear on the keypad mic input screen even though no keypad mic is connected. The actual control head still has the keys in the correct position. I guess the next step is to read the radio codeplug and see if the control head keys reappear in the correct postion. Maybe the "saved to disk" CP got corrupted when I saved it to disk? When I originally read the codeplug, the control head keys were correct although the keys matched a "Black key" head while my MCS2000 has the later "white keys"..so I guess the previous owner used a CP originally created for an earlier MCS2000.

I have had a similar issue before using DOS RSS and very very early firmware...something like 0.03!!! The new MCS2000 is running 5.13 firmware (using the press monitor key trick 5 times)...although the CPS info screen no longer shows the firmware version..just a blank space.

So is the "saved to disk" codeplug corrupt or is there a firmware mismatch between CPS R02.02.00 and firmware 5.13?

What radios do you own?: HT1550's, X9000's, CDM1550's

sounds like you are going back and forth between rss and cps? If that's the case once you program the radio with cps you'll need cps to read it again, the rss will say codeplug too new. OR you are trying to read a radio with an older cps than the radio was programmed with?

You can NOT use RSS and CPS, as HLA stated, once you use CPS, you can no longer program the radio with RSS.
The standard maxim is: RSS = RSS forever, CPS = CPS forever, no swapping between either.

I am just using CPS!!!

I always read a new radio with RSS first and if I get "Codeplug too New" I switch to CPS.

By the way, I find that RSS Help Screens are better than CPS Help Screens ...RSS Help Screens always give default values...with CPS you have no idea what the default values should be!!!

Maybe the previous owner used CPS version R02.03.00 (the last version) when I used CPS R02.02.00...but I did not get a "Codeplug too New" message.

Maybe the previous owner loaded an old codeplug from a very early firmware MCS2000 into the "later" 5.13 firmware MCS2000? Can you actualy do this..ie use an "idenitcal" CP from an early firmware RSS progged MCS2000 and copy that CP into a later CPS progged 5.13 firmware radio???

UPDATE: I started again with the original codeplug (the 1st thing I do when I read a new radio is to save the original codeplug..as Batlabs always says!!!) and everything now seems OK.

I'm still not sure what caused the strange control head key reposition issue. One thing I did was change any unused front keys to "Unprogrammed" rather than "Blank"..I think I might have previously had a mixture of both ..but I doubt this would have any effect?

One good thing about CPS is that you can view the Personality input screens as a big spreadsheet - so you can very quickly change values going down a particular column...but I still like the RSS Help Pages!!!
